United Way Chairman, John Loo, says he is very excited about this years campaign. He said that with a lot of planning and preparation by his committee and the United Way Agency, (all volunteers), a Campaign Kick Off Day, full of activities and events for everyone, is scheduled for September 18, beginning at 8 a.m., and continuing to 2 p.m John said that along with the tra ditional pancake breakfast, flea market, and library book sale, new events have been added to the day. Some of these new events include a Fly Past by the Nelson flight demonstration ‘by the Model Club, a Murder Mystery Dinner by the Kootenay Columbia Child Care, and an exhibition hockey game between the Castlegar Rebels and the Nel- son Maple Leaf Junior teams. The hockey game is dedicated to the United Way. Funds from a $1 ticket sold at the gate will be donated by the Rebels to the United Way According to Campaign Chair- man, John Loo, United Way vol- unteers will be out to do door-to-door residential canvas on Sept. 21 and 22. Loo said that by giving generously, you can help those who are in need in our community. Last year alone, United Way helped one in four people through the services provided by United Way Agencies. Castlegar RCMP provides 24-hour a day service Quite often, the general public living outside the Nelson area assume they have the wrong number, when, dialing their local RCMP office they receive a response from Nelson In order to provide police service 24 hours a day, the RCMP phone Systems are equipped with the capability of “call diverting”, or all forwarding” which allows the detachment members to switch their local phones to Nelson after regular office hours, or when members are on patrol. The Nelson Subdivision complex in Nelson houses an Oper ational Communications Centre which provides a 24-hour servi the public. Commonly known as the O.C.C., this centre is staffed by highly qualified civilian members who are trained to cither respond t your problems directly, or contact a member for you. When the offi is closed, all police detachment are equipped with a phone outside their office door, which is automatically answered by the Nelson OC ( These phone services are provided throughout the province at all police offices which are not staffed 24-hours a day, thereby the general public to receive police assistance at any given time Although this telephone system is not openly accepted by all mem bers of the public, hopefully this will explain the necessity for such a system and it is our only avenue to provide 24-hour service at location: where there are insufficient RCMP personne! to provid t Vice. Speakers poke of such topics as sale car seats. nutrition, and child deve lopment, and Josafatow said more of the same quality speakers can be expected in the next session. Josafatow said that not only did the women learn more about them selves and their children, but also formed personal bonds with some of the other mothers who attended the session fricndships which many continued after the sessions ended. They were all enthusiastic, and several ladies have continued meeting on a social basis.
