Now they’ve got Twin Peaks * shirts and coffee mugs, a Mark Frost was characteristically coy about what will happen this year. He said the writers never intended to reveal Palmer's killer last season. If the show hadn't been renewed this season, they’d have made a movie to conclude the series. He insisted they knew all along who the murderer was, despite rumors to the contrary. He also said that even after the Palmer murder is solved, Cooper will be hanging around Twin Peaks to work on other crimes. Click. There's even a cassette of the show’s FBI agent, Dale Cooper, making tape-recorded memos to his unseen secretary. Cast are at tables throughout the room. How to Celebrate a Holiday Easy Steps Call for reservations: Shop, swim, and play! Come to Spokane, Washington. You'll love it here! Kyle MacLachlan, who plays Agent Cooper, is being swarmed. No sur- prise there. There’s also a knot of male reporters around sultry Sherilyn Fenn, who plays Audrey Horne. Curious, nobody is talking to Piper Laurie. Click. Diane, I'm standing directly behind MacLachian’s left shoulder. His head is bobbing back and forth as questions fly at him from all sides. He hasn’t touched his breakfast — scrambled eggs and hash browns — and his coffee looks cold. Pity. He’s fiddling with something . . . a pack of Mariboros. Looks younger than Cooper, from what I can see of his face. Round, wire-rimmed glasses. A bookish but decidedly boyish look Let me see if I can sneak in a question. Mr. MacLachlan, Agent Cooper seems almost like a superhero. Does he have a tragic flow? “It’s there. It may take its time coming out. It’s starting around the edges there a little bit, | think. Not exactly sure what direction it’s going to go, but I think it’s going to come out this season. The-mystery builds. Click. Diane, I’ve spotted Frost. Not hard really. With white pants and a “ peacock-colored floral shirt, he stan- ds out against the woodsy grain like a neon palm among northwest pines. Mr. Frost, a lot of people felt betrayed and even angry by the en- ding last year when Laura Palmer's murder wasn’t solved. Did you expect that reaction? “No. If I had, | might have done soemthing different. That people cared that much to feel those kind of emotions was kinds of amazing. And also think they'll get over it.’” Click. I’m talking to Bob Iger now, the big cheese at ABC. Mr. Iger, one problem with Twin Peaks was that it was hard to jump in if you weren't watching from the beginning. “One of the things that will be ad- dressed in this coming season is to tailor it to make it a little bit more ac cessible to the non-regular viewer. Certain story lines will stretch over two or three episodes instead of seven or eight.’” But is there then a danger of losing its cultish following? “*No, it’s never going to lose its per- sonality.”” Here, here. Click. The two-hour season premiere runs Sept. 30 on ABC. The regular series beings Oct. 6. Bert Rourke, campaign chair- man, described the goal as “realistic.” He conceded that there have been tough economic times in the community this year, but said if those who haven't given before donate this year and if previous donors ‘‘are a little bit more generous,’’ then the goal can be reached. Rourke made his remarks at a meeting of the Castlegar Kiwanis Club. At a campaign kick-off break- fast Saturday morning hosted by the United Way and City of Castlegar for United Way volun- teers and representatives of mem- ber (receiving) agencies, the em- phasis was on the need for canvass volunteers. Ald. Lawrence Chernoff said an increase in volunteers ‘‘will raise the pride we have in our community’ and expressed op- timism people will respond to the challenge. Rossland-Trail MLA Chris “‘but_ those dollars don’t go as far.” He, too, expressed optimism the United Way campaign will find the volunteers needed to suc- cessfully conduct its annual can- vass. United Way president Barb Bray echoed the need for volun- teers, saying that ‘‘without volun- teers there'll be no United Way or any other community groups."" Guest speaker was Linda Com- ba, district administrator for the Canadian National Institute for the Blind. Saying she personally has benefited from the work of volunteers in the CNIB agency and from volunteers within the communities in which she has lived, she called on the community to make the campaign a success. Comba said the number of blind people in the Castlegar area has risen to 22 from 17 in just a few years and they are helped by the United Way here.
