‘The federal Railway Tran-
port Committee (RTC) has
turned down CP. Rail's request
to abandon its 81-mile ‘line
Inking Nakusp and New. Den.
ver.

Tn a decision roloaned
Monday, the RTC ruled that
although the rail tine w wa likely
continue to operate at a loss, it
is “essential and ‘shi ot be
abandoned.”

The committee als0. or-
dered CP Rail to submit a plan
for maintenance of the line over
the next five years. The plan is
to include cost’ estimates and
muat be approved by the RTC’
before the work is carried out.

In its statement, the RTC
sald its ruling was based upon
hearings held in Nakusp in July
and upon subsequent submis-
sions.

Kootenay-West MP Bob
Brisco, who attended the hear-
ings, sald that he was “pleased

King (B.C. Labor Minister) and
