é roe eal ~ NF iy Ruins of Old Sawmill All Part of Local History é Pulpit ee Pew T : By Pastor Donald W. Road I recall the wit who once re- marked, “Many a fellow falls in love with a dimple and . makes the mis- 2. 4S. take of marrying the whole girl." Sounds like it might have been Mark Twain, or was it Stephen Leacock? "No, this is not a marriage piece—not this ‘time around anyway. What I'm wondering is this: how often do we really examine the basis reasons whieh trigger our actions or determine our behavior? Do we buy a house because we like the chandelier? Do we choose our new car because we like the color? Do we read the book because it has an eye- catching dust-jacket? Do we marry the girl because she has Caivary Baptist Church Offers Varied Program Calvary Baptist Church is offering its members a varied program of activities through- out the fall months, In October the young people of the church enjoyed a Halloween party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Rik Hall. This group of young people meet weekly on Tuesdays for ‘choir practice, directed by K. Nelson. Pastor D, W. Reed then leads them in a Bible study and topic discussions. This week's topic was, “What about Smoking, Alcohol and Drugs?” Refreshments are enjoyed at the close of these meetings. e 8 The Adult Fellowship group held a pot-luck supper in October for its first social of the season. The table decorations, arranged by Mrs. Carolynne Mason, were later given as prizes. The November social will take place at the gymnasium. 2 8 8 The senior choir practice is on Wednesdays under the direction of K. Nelson. Two groups meet for prayer and Bible study. One group, led by J. Hemmons, is continuing last year's study, “Ten Basic Steps Toward Christian Maturity", ‘The other group, led by Pastor D. W. Reed, is studying the life of “Barnabus” from the Book of Acts. A film, “The Temple”, based on the dynamic book, “Satan in the Sanctuary", was shown last Sunday evening. This film showed the incredible past, present and future of Israel, e 8 6 Come join our family at the old arena, skating from 6 - 7 p.m. Between 30 and 40 people enjoyed this hour of recreation last week. oe 8 6 Congratulations are ex. tended to Mr. and Mrs, Frank Jonkman on the occasion of their 57th wedding anniversary. on Nov. 8, Woman Flown To Vancouver After Accident A Nelson woman was flown to Vancouver Friday following an early morning single car accident that day which put both occupants in hospital. Police said their sedan was totalled near Nancy Greene Junction when it struck a rock bluff. Injured are the driver, Wayne Lebedavoff and his wife, Donna, Mr. Lebedavolf was re- leased from hospital on the weekend. The accident is still under investigation, A pretty face or maybe a stunning figure? Now we all like a pretty face (I'm even human enough to enjoy a comely figure); dust- jackets adorn many an other- + wise dull volume, I personally prefer blue cars; and a spar- kling chandelier can be a real eye-grabber. But so what? Red cars may run better than blue cars; chandeliers are hard to keep clean; dust covers can be Phoney and they say that beauty is only skin deep. Whatever—I still like a pretty face; I also have a weakness for chandeliers, color- ful dust-jackets and blue cars, Where is this all taking me? What is it all saying? Simply that whether we recog- nize it or not, most of our actions are based on rather flimsy reasoning. Skiing is more fun than worshipping; it's easier to read the paper than to read the Bible; muddling along may not be the best way to live but it sure beats praying; I'm not going to insist that my children attend Sunday School—better that they maké their own + decision. So" much’ of “our ‘thinking ~ and behaving is riddled with false reasoning. The headline ofa little item caught my eye recently. It ead, “Why Fire Trucks are Red!" Fire trucks have four wheels and eight men. Four and eight are 12 and there are 12 inches in a foot. A foot is a ruler. Queen Elizabeth is a ruler and her ships sail the seven seas. Seas have fish and fish have fins and the Finns fought the Russians who are red. Since fire trucks are always ‘rushin’ . . . therefore, fire trucks are red, Silly, isn't it? Of course! But not any sillier than some of the reasoning people give for not attending Sunday School and church, What's your reason? Be sure it's a good one. | church — directory ST. The administration building perches a few hundred ‘feet above the marshes and is a most imposing place. We had only time to talk with an obliging young lady about the purpose, the layout, and the routine of tours, She gave us some nicely illustrated booklets, described the general topography of the marshes, and volunteered special directions to the nesting grounds of the great blue heron, Alas, we had to explain to her that with the Nght in the sky already dimming, we would not be able to explore today, but would return in late March or early April to see the busy lime that develops with the northward return of the migra- tory birds, She told us we would be very welcome. There will be’ swans, geese, 15 species of ducks, herons, hawks, eagles, and cranes waiting for us in the spring. Meanwhile, we must leave. We notice the many muskrat “teepees” in the shallow marsh as we drive away, and the dozens of ducks still loitering. We will come back with field- glasses and camera, and more time.
