Answer: e ‘ A number of explanations + come to mind, all of which point {to the fact that up to now, there thas been no special incentive to ‘justify extensive commercial use of alder. ' True-alder is a good wood. ‘Large, high quality alder logs ‘make excellent lumber and tyeneer for furniture. But, un- ‘Mike Oregon and Washington istate, British Columbia has ‘very little alder of the size and ‘quality required for such com- ‘mercial uses. ! Some of our alder is used sfor firewood. In Vancouver it ‘sells for about $70 to $85 a cord, Seut, split and delivered for the ‘fireplace. 2 This size of alder could also tbe used to make chips for the ‘manufacture of pulp, but it twould have to be delivered to inst Go Home Comfort Ask About the Forest Potential of Alder Explored the mill at a lower cost and at a price that could compete with other woods. Unfortunately, it costs more money to harvest a hardwood like alder than to harvest softwood (conifer) spe- cies. It happens, too, that our pulp and paper industry is already adequately supplied. Actually, the feasibility of building a pulpmill in our Coast region to utilize red alder has been investigated from time to time but, to date, no one has found there is sufficient volume or market demand for alder chips to justify the effort. (A pulpmill at Crofton does use some red alder, but the propor- tion seldom exceeds five per cent of its total wood intake.) However, we live in a day of rapid change and today’s situation does not necessarily have to be the final word. As a matter of fact, considerable work on B.C. alder has been in progress at the University of British Columbia__for__some years (supported by the Na- tional Research Council, the Productivity Committee of the B.C. Forest Service and under the direction of Dr. Harry Smith). Red ‘alder stands growing on the University of B.C. campus and the endowment lands have been analysed to determine the biomass (dry weight of organic matter) in stands of varying levels of density. - Numbers of young alder trees per acre have been studied and compared as to increases in height over a period of time; also. the extent to which total growth and yield can be affected by various spacings of the trees. Other aspects have also received attention. Should con- ditions warrant, red alder could have a high potential for pro- duction of energy from planta- tions grown specially for power generation. Alternatively, red alder could be converted to cattle feed. Or, it might be better used for growing the fibre needed for lumber or paper products. ‘To summarize, as matters stand at the present time, growing alder ona piece of land usually compares poorly with conifers and other land uses, But, this may not always be the case. First of all, we need to learn more about how alder can be grown profitably. Then, as different needs develop, it is not inconceivable alder could come into its own. Although today most stands cannot be harvested and marketed at a profit, it is still worthwhile to consider the future possibili- ties. As you say, alder grows fast, thrives in our climate— and if it grows to maturity and dies without being used, we have a total waste of good pread your fuel costs over 10 equal monthly ments. RIVERVALE, B.C. 368-3020 Alter a summer recess, the ladies of the Auxiliary for the Kaslo Victorian Hospital met in the board room for their first , meeting Sept. 11. Members were asked to donate more books as the supply was down. President Mae Bird read a letter from Mrs. MacPherson, president of the B.C, Auxiliary, and asked her to submit names of the active who had held during the summer, one being the annual fish derby and the other the strawberry festi- val. Both were successful, as the derby brought in $259. The largest fish was caught by N. *Murano of Trail, who returned the prize money of $100 to the auxiliary, thereby swelling the amount to $359, ‘Proceeds from the festival were $125.25. The community bus, to which the auxiliary contributed $100, is operating successfully between Kaslo and Nelson. He notes that the church is studying its missions in East Africa and the Middle East during the third quarter of the year (July through September). “Adventists have been ac- tive in Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika) since 1903,” says Zinner. “In that year, German Seventh-day Adventists came to the Upare Mountains in the northeastern part of the na- tion.” Today, Adventists number about 37,000 in the nation of 15 million, or nearly one of every 405 persons. The nation is about 30 per cent Christian and 30 per cent Islamic, with the remaining 40 per cent following African animist beliefs. Mount Kilimanjaro, famed in Ernest Hemingway's slory, tises more than 19,000 fect within the country's borders, ~ “Adventists, around the world, through ‘their’ Sabbath School network, will give a special offering this month to expand the Parane Secondary School,” says Zinner. He adds that the school, with a faculty of six, is training hundreds of young people in East Africa. “And this is tre- mendously important in a na- tion with an 82 per cent illi- teracy rate.” Don't Know Signs U.S. Safety. authorities were surprised to find that college students do not recog- nize standardized sign shapes as expected. A letter from Mrs, Rezan- soff of Grand Forks, and West Kootenay representative, was read, reminding members of the annual meeting for the district to be held in Nakusp next Wednesday. Those volun- teering to attend were Mae Bird, Hilary Macdowell, Alice Augustine and Margaret Jar- dine. Among events planned for the coming season is bingo, to take place the third Wednesday of each month. The first one was scheduled for yesterday in the scout hall.
