Golf Tips

Last week, we began a discussion of blade angle, the third ball flight

To review, the blade angle determines the initial direction, trajec
tory, and most importantly, ball curvature. A clubface open (or closed) 1
degree will result in the ball finishing approximately 1.75% of the total
distance of the shot

This figure may not sound like much, but magnified over the errors
of 5 to 10 degrees it becomes very significant. The more the clubface is
‘out of alignment,’ we find that the golfer must make a compensation in
the golf swing allowing for it

How many times have you seen somebody on the driving ‘range
slicing the ball badly then allowing for it by aligning himself up much left
of the target. The golfer has made a move compensating for poor blade
angle, thus creating two wrongs rather than one right

How do we learn proper bladk angle? First we must understand what
we are trying to accomplish. The ideal blade angle is that which is perpen-
dicular to the target upon impact within reasonable limits. To arrive here
wer must understand that the position of our hands determines the
position of the clubface

The position of our hands is determined by the grip. .. Ah back to the
set up. So first of all we must make sure that our grip is correct as we went
over weeks ago. To learn proper blade angle in the most natural and sim-
ple manner work on the following ‘Toe up to Toe up Drill.”

To do this drill, assume the correct grip and set up positions. Now
making half swing, that is swing the hands to waist high going back and
through, make sure that the toe of the club is pointing up towards the sky
That is it, the drill is simple but effective and will eliminate the unwanted
curvature of your golf shots

Ilesic to get his
kicks in San Diego

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Free agent
punter Hank Ilesic, who left the
Toronto Argonauts last week, has
been| signed by the San Diego
Chargers, the club announced
Tuesday

Hesic, a 13-year veteran of the
Canadian Football League who spent
the last seven years with Toronto,
averaged 44 yards last year on 142 pun
ts in 18 games, including:a best of 77
yards

The Chargers, 0-2, changed punters
this season, but Lewis Colbert has the
worst average in the AFC at 33.3 yards
on eight kicks. He averaged 30 yards
on two punts last Sunday against the
Houston Oilers, but one was just 14
yards.

Ralf Mojsiejenko, whom the
Chargers traded during preseason to
the Washington Redskins for a seven-
th-round draft choice, is second in the
NFC with a 44.8-yard average. His net
average is 36.2 yards compared to
Colbert's 27.9 yards.

llesic is the CFL record-holder for
number of punts (1,573) and punting
yards in a single season (8,004 on 165
punts). Healso had at least one punt of
70 yards or more in each of his 13
seasons, with a career best of 90 yards
in 1983

Ilesic, who twice averaged more
than $0 yards per punt in a game,
joined the Edmonton Eskimos while in
high school in.1977 at the age of 17

established, Ehman is hopeful that it

about alternative educational delivery
systems, and hopes to get the three
provincial universities and the Open
University to tap into local resources
for the delivery of courses.

attitude about what is possible through
distance education,” Ehman said
