Betty Leitner

Betty Leitner of Rock Creek, formerly of Kinnaird, died_April 7,
1991, at age 80,

Born in Chicago in 1910, she moved to Victoria as a young child
and, ut age 17 in the Vanderhoof area, began what was to be a 45-year
teaching career.

i Betty was by her coll as an i teacher
with the presentation of the Ferguson Award as B.C.’s teacher of the
year in 1978,

She married Gus Leitner in 1938 in Trail and shortly after moved
to Kinnaird where she lived for the next 47 years. She was a poet,
orator, calligrapher, librarian, gardener and mentor.

She is survived by her husband Gus; daughter Gail; sons David
and Ken; and 12 grandchildren,

At Betty's request, there will be no funeral service. The family
invites friends to a gathering at the Leitner residence in Castlegar at

Maria Merlo

Maria Merlo of Castlegar died Tuesday, April 16, 1991, at age 85.

Maria was born Jan. 10, 1906, at Trevignino, Treviso, Italy.and
came to Canada in 1958. She first settled in Natal, B.C., and came to.
Castlegar in 1967. She was a member of St. Rita’s Catholic Church
and enjoyed gardening, cooking and sewing.

She is survived by her daughter, Ernesta Graziotto of Castlegar;
and four grandsons.

Prayers will be recited Thursday at 7 p.m. at St. Rita’s Catholic
Church and Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday at 10
a.m. with Father Herman Engberink as celebrant. Interment will be at
Park Memorial Cemetery.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Castlegar
Funeral Chapel.
