BOARD OF TRUSTEES Protesters released CAMPBELL RIVER, B.C. CP) — Twenty-six people charged with mischief after a March 12 demonstration against mineral exploration in Strathcona Provincial Park pleaded not guilty. in provincial court on Tuesday. A county court judge in Courtenay, B.C., had refused Monday to vary the terms of bail for seven members of the group who wanted to return to the Cream Silver Mines Ltd. drilling site to gather evidence for their defence. The others had signed con ditions of releases promising not to go within five kilo- metres of the site. The seven, five men and two women, were released Tuesday after signing the same conditions. They had been in jail since their arrest New traffic lights VICTORIA (CP) Driv. ers in British Colun.via will have a new traffic signal to cope with soon — the amber arrow. The provincial cabinet has approved the use of amber arrows for turns at inter- sections. Once in operation they are designed to smooth the transition between red and green lights for drivers turning at an intersection. Drivers facing the amber arrow will have to stop, unless unable to do so safely. If they must continue, they can “proceed with caution” to make their turn, giving way to pedestrians. There's no word on when the new lights will show up on the mainland but a num. ber of them will be installed in Victoria this year, said a spokesman for the city's traffic engineering depart ment. Trail for the 26 was set for May 24-25 in Campbell River provincial court. The Cream Silver drilling operation in the central Van- couver Island park has been the scene of regular protests since January, with more than 60 people arrested in all. The protesters, part of a group known as the Friends of Strathcona, oppose further mineral development in the park — which already has one working mine — because. they fear pollution of the watershed and other envir- onmental damage. The provincial government has ordered an independent review of resource develop- ment in Strathcona, British Columbia's oldest provincial park. It has stopped issuing resource permits but has not rescinded Cream _ Silver's drilling permit.
