This year’s event, being held at the Com- munity Complex Dec. 10, promises to be an especially enjoyable one as the Castlegar May Day Committee and the Castlegar Arts Council join together to present A Family Christmas With Francis Xavier, an arts council an- d May Day committee news release says. The celebration will begin at 4 p.m. with the trimming of a special Christ- mas tree: Children of all ages will be welcome to assist by making and hanging decorations. Dinner will be served at 5 p.m. with ham and turkey provided by the sponsors. As this is pot-luck affair, attending families will bring salads, side dishes and desserts to share, the news release says. Following dinner, Santa will arrive to hear the children’s Christmas wishes and to distribute Christmas treats. At 7 p.m., Francis Xavier's concert program will offer a happy blend of traditional carols and folksongs of Christmas from many lands, the release says. Accompanying himself on_acoustic,—classical_and—12-string guitars, Xavier will perform in several languages including English, Spanish, Russian and German, as well as the rare and mysterious language of the Basques. Xavier brings to the stage a strong sense of legend, myth and history, the release says. His stage presence and commentary provide a unique setting for every-song he sings. His perfor- mances are a sojourn into other cultures, times and places says, ‘‘There is an entire generation of new artists out there now. I say, let them have the field.’* This almost echoes the time, 1S years ago, when his Sundown album was so popular that Lightfoot called radio stations to ask them to stop playing it into the grave. Now, without naming any, he would like the public and entertainment media to be more receptive to new ar- tists. Singers preparing for annual cantata Singers from around the West Kootenay have been preparing for their annual Christmas Cantata, to be performed soon in various com- munities around the region. ‘ The 35 members of the Bisset Choir are from locations ranging from Kaslo to Nelson to Slocan and have met on a regular basis in small classes to learn the basictine of their music, The Touch of Christmas by Brower and Maddux. Then, when this line was learned, they assembled as a group to develop the exceptional sound of this composition, which is written for upto 11 voice parts, a news release from Bisset Choir says. Audrey and Chuck Bisset have studied at the Peabody Conservatory and the New York Met and have been developing the beautiful sound of this choir for several years, the news release says. Since each choir member is a student of one of these two singers, the sound of the choir has developed intoa beautiful experience for those people who enjoy professional-sounding choral music, according to the release The Bisset Choir will be performing the Christmas Cantata in Trail Dec. 3 at 6 p.m. at the Alliance Church, in Kaslo Dec. 9 at 7 p.m. at the United Church, in Nelson Dec. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Bethel Christian Centre, and in Nakusp Dec. 17 at 7 p.m. at Robertson Memorial United. DISC MARKET Davis, who records as a one-man band under the name Mannheim Steamroller, is responsible for one of the few holiday music success stories of the 1980s. He records instrumental New Age versions of Christmas classics specifically designed for compact disc players. With record companies re-releasing classics by Crosby, the Carpenters and Johnny Mathis every year, it may be a surprise to learn that Davis’s 1984 release, Mannheim Steamroller Christmas, and his 1988 recording, A Fresh Aire Christmas, were the top- selling holiday albums last year It surprised Davis. “Christmas albums were much considered death in the industry,”’ Davis said. ‘If you did a Christmas album, it was like signing off.”* The Mannheim Steamroller records wed the old and new in a combination perfect for listeners too old for rock 'n’ roll novelty records and too young for tawrence Welk. Orchestras, syn- thesizers and electric guitars are used in instrumental versions of classics and a few new compositions. ANEW WAY Davis's records, along with George Winston’s December album on Win dham Hill Records, are expected to be hot sellers again this year pretty “Ithas a broad appeal,” said Geoff Mayfield, associate research director for Billboard “If you like Group wants toys Slocan Valley Women's Institute requested members to bring their stuf fed toys for the children’s hospitals to their Christmas party to be held Dec 12 at the Slocan Hall in Slocan. ; The bath boutique basket is well stocked with beautiful articles and will be drawn for on Dec. 12 A-number of cards have been sent out by the sunshine committee to those in hospital, the newborn, and bereaved. Goody bags will be filled with Christmas baking then distributed to the shut-ins before Christmas During tea time members were given a demonstration on how to construct a pine cone wreath which was completed by the end of the social hour A delicious lunch was served by hostesses Marion Bullanoff and Marie Hendrix. Silvery traditional Christmas music, that’s what it’s about, but it’s presented ina new way.”” Holiday records have always been a strange stepchild of the music in- dustry “They’re probably some of the most difficult types of songs to write and have catch on because there’s such an established litany of old material that people are fond of,’? said David McLees, artists and repertoire co- ordinator for Rhino Records. The all-time champ of the modern era is Irving Berlin’s composition of White Christmas, heard first in the 1942 movie Holiday Inn. The song has sold more than 100 million copies, with Crosby’s version accounting for about 30 million, Whitburn said TOP SELLER The Christmas song that’s sold the most copies since 1955 is a little less reverent — it’s the novelty record The Chipmunk Song, first released in 1958, ‘Whitburn said. Most of the Christmas records that are played repeatedly on the radio these days date from the 1955-65 decade. They include Jingle Bell Rock, Silver Bells, The Little Drummer Boy, Please Come Home for Christifias, The Christmas Song and Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree. In fact, of the Top 10 best-selling Christmas songs for what Billboard magazine defines as the “rock era’’ (1955 and after), only one is from after 1970. That’s the barked version of Jingle Bells, by the Singing Dogs. SEN SY THE BANQUET ROOM Beautifully decorated with a dance floor available!
