Air pollution in the
Castlegar and Trail areas
was discussed at a regular
meeting of the West Koote-
nay Union Board of Health
in Grand Forks on Wednes-
day of last week.

Medical ‘Health officer Dr.
Nick Schmitt reported that
complaints by local citizens
left little doubt that air pol-
lution in the lower
Columbia Valley had been
particularly noticeable this
summer.

The City of Castlegar is
to have a new well at the
cost of $22,099.

The low bid of Pacific
Pump and Pressure Instal-
lations Ltd. of Castlegar
was accepted by council
Tuesday night over two oth-
er bids, the highest being
$27,019 submitted by Pacif-
ic Water Wells.

Westar Timber Ltd. sold
its Celgar Pulp Operations
Saturday for $95 million to
a consortium of two Montre-
al companies and a Chinese
bank.

“This sale really marks
the exit from our direct par-
ticipation as a company (in)
the pulp business,” David
Mitchell, Westar’s general
manager of industrial rela-
tions, said in a telephone in-
terview from Vancouver.
