Chinese culture hits Castlegar

Castlegar has scored a
cultural coup of sorts.

Dr. Li Ling Yan, renowned
artist and President of the
Yueyang Teachers College in
Yueyang, China, was in town
yesterday.

Li took some time out of his
schedule to meet with Stanley
Humphries art teacher Donald
Fyfe-Wilson and his students.

But according to Mickey
Kinakin, that was just a
pleasant side-effect of Li’s visit.

“Mr Li is in town because he
is meeting with the leadership
of Selkirk College,” Kinakin
said.

“Officially, Mr. Li is here to
visit the college,” Kinakin said,
adding that Li’s position in
China is equivalent to a college
principal.

Kinakin, himself chairman of
the School District No. 9
education committee and a
member of the twinning
program committee, said that
Li was in town for another
reason as well.

“He is a representative of
Castlegar’s twin city, YueYang,
China, and he is here to make
YueYang familiar among the
citizens of Castlegar,” Kinakin
said.

“He’s come here to speak
about YueYang and China in
general. It’s a cultural
exchange.”

Kinakin added that
Castlegar is still currently in
the process of twinning with
YueYang, an event which he

residents.

“Today a group of kids were
getting a totally different
perception of the world, of a
totally different culture,”
Kinakin said.

“That in itself is. a
phenomenal intrinsic value.

“We are moving into a world
that is globalized and it’s
important for our students to
be given the.advantage of being
able to look at different

cultures.”

Kinakin added that Li , by
sharing his knowledge of
traditional Chinese painting
with local art students, made
the twinning project a success.

“Our kids there got an
opportunity to have an eminent
artist come and speak to them
because of the twinning.
There’s not a negativity there.”

Speaking through his
translator Zhang Sheng Lin,
Dr. Li said “It has been a very

successful trip and I have
enjoyed myself.”

Li said he found the people
of Castlegar hospitable and the
scenery outstanding.

“I have quite a number of
photographs,” Li said.

He then explained that in
China, artists paint not only
what they see but what they
feel.

“For that reason, I will be
painting the wonderful things I
felt here.”

Kinnaird Junior Secondary School rules Spokane

The Kinnaird Junior
Secondary School marching
band is the best in the west.

Or the north for that matter.

Lead by band instructor Ken
Nelson and drum majorettes
Kerri Redekop and Amber
Kenneway, the KJSS band
marched into the Spokane
Junior Lilac Parade May 9,
stealing the show and their
division.

“We went to Spokane
because we wanted to compete
with the other bands,”
Kenneway said.

“And it was really fun. I
would do it again any day.”

Kenneway, 13, admits that
after seeing the competition
she wasn’t sure of K.J’s chances
of winning.

“They were really good,” she
said.

“I had a feeling we would
probably end up a close second
if anything.”

Redekop, 14, said her band’s
chances of winning were
increased because of good
leadership.

“Mr. Nelson is a good band
teacher,” Redekop said.

“He devotes a lot of time to
his music and his teaching.”

Nelson said his students
performed well in the two
hour, 50 band competition.

“As usual they were great,”
he said.

“Winning was a treat. For
us to even come close would
have been a real thrill.”

KJSS has been competing at
the Spokane Junior Lilac
Parade for 15 years, and has
won their division once before.
