by $75 for the third and each
subsequent child, and by $213
if the child is under seven and

Wellness clinics, like the one held in
Castlegar last week, allow seniors
more control over their own health.

Are they popular?
Just ask the 391 senior citizens
who participated.

Preventative health care and maintenance is on the leading edge. Gone are the days when a
Person went to see their physician only when in medical need or crisis. This concept is
becoming more accepted as we become an aging society, and the medical, financial, and
social benefits of preventative health care are being recognized. At least they were during a
Flu Clinic and Wellness Day, held for Castlegar senior citizens, Oct. 14.

“Our medical system is strained. Bringing the Well Clinic to the ity is a for-
ward step in keeping people healthy, and allowing people to stay in their own home instead
of a facility. With this clinic, people feel that they are in charge of their own health,” said
Susan Faye, a physiotherapist at the Central Kootenay Health Unit.

Held at St. Rita's Parish Hall, the Clinic and Wellness day was so well received by senior
citizens, that by 10:30 am. more than 150 people had attended.

“Most older people usually stay with the same physician, but i their p ipti
are changed to a new or updated version. Quite often they feel that it would be a waste to
throw their old drugs out. This clinic is good because when we ask them to bring in their old
and expired medications then they feel they are not really throwing it out.”

The Health Unit is also hoping to sponsor a “Brown Bag’ day. The elderly will be encour-
aged to bring in their unused medications in a bag so the drugs can be disposed of property.

There was also a dietary display hosted by the Health Unit.

Jeff Krueger, a dietary intern, stressed. the importance of healthy eating habits. He feels
that people are becoming more educated concerning their diets.

“There is so much literature published, but there is still a lot of dietary myths and quack-
ery. The male gender is starting to catch on. Seniors have different dietary needs. We are
focusing on decreasing salt intake and increasing fiber
intake.”

and it’s a good combination. We'll come again if we're

Besides flu vaccination, there was blood pressure
monitoring, nutrition information, pharmacy consulta-

was also tea and bake tables arranged by the Catholic
Ladies.

Because the influenza virus mutates, a new vaccine is developed yearly.

The flu vaccine that is being offered is specifically for A/Texas, A/Beijing, and B/Panama.
This vaccine is available to Persons over 65 years of age, children and adults with a chronic
cardiac or pulmonary disorder, or anyone with kidney disease, cancer or anemia.

Laura Richards, another senior, said, “This is the third time I have attended a flu clinic. I
think the vaccine works, touch wood. I haven't had the flu since I started getting the vac-
cine.”

Pharmacist Marla Hamann was also available to collect old or outdated medications, and
dispense pharmaceutical advice to the seniors

Hamann said that medication hoarding can at times be quite a problem with the elderly.

Cindy Talarico, public health nurse at the Health Unit said, “We would like to offer this
again next year, but we would like to expand it more. We are hoping to have more samples of
healthy products, and maybe offer cholesterol testing too.”

Last year there were 296 people who attended the first day of a wellness clinic. This year
the total for the first day was 391.

Maybe Fred Fominoff, a senior who attended the Clinic said it best. “It’s a good thing for
everybody. Where else can the seniors go to get everything they need?”
