It must be tough being a talent-
ed offensive player in the game
of hockey these days. You make
pretty passes, score unbelievable
goals and genuinely excite the
fans, yet all along you know
defence wins i

The Rebels have been strug-
gling defensively for most of this
season, but have still compiled
the best record in the South Divi-
sion of the KIJHL due in large
part to the scoring prowess of
players like Jesse Oldham, Todd
Doyle and Nino Dacosta. The
defence has been there, but you
can’t give up over five goals a
game and expect to challenge
come playoff time.

The coaches have been stress-
ing defence in practice and the
results finally surfaced last week-
end as the Castlegar Rebels final-
ly showed they can play a
complete game. It also didn't hurt
having stellar performances from
the two goalies roaming the
Rebels crease.

Golden has been stuck in
fourth in the North Division and
suffered another defeat recently

points to Grand Forks for a game
in which the Rockets used an
ineligible player. Add to that a
long road trip and you can see

why K ff deserved to be
confident before the game.

The defence again played well
in front of their goaltender. They
allowed only 29 shots and
Kooznetsoff had a clear view of
the majority of them.

his offensive charm once again
on Sunday with his third hat trick
of the season, which has yet to hit
the halfway mark. The three
goals helped him extend his lead
in the South Division scoring
race with 30 points but still
leaves him four points shy of
Columbia Valley’s Troy McNel-
lie, who leads the League.

“One big thing with Jesse is he
works hard in practise in concen-
trating in hitting spots,” said
Rebels head coach Garry Sauer.
“He's working hard on shooting
and it’s showing in the games.
Most of the opportunities he's
getting, he’s been capitalizing on.
He’s here as a leader and he’s
demonstrated that.”

Oldham’s production was all the
Rebels needed and the game ended
3-1. Golden's only goal came on a
breakaway at the seven minute
mark of the third period, spoiling
Kooznetsoff’s shutout bid.

Overall, the Rebels gained five
of a possible six points on the
weekend and the team is playing
a lot better as a solid unit. The

ment open to teams of all levels in British Columbia, Alberta and

The 1994 B.C. Seniors Mens P incial Curling Ch i i
are being held at the Castlegar Curling Club on December 16, 17.
and 18. Eight teams of players 55 years or older will be represent-
ing 8 different zones in an effort to gain a spot in the National
Championship being held in Montreal. There will be four teams
from the Interior and four from the Coast. Opening ceremonies for
the Provincial Championship will get underway at 1 p.m. at the
Castlegar Curling rink. For tickets or any further information call

Table Tennis Playdowns

It is qualifying time for the Winter Games once again and many
sports have yet to fill out their teams. One of those is table tennis
and the qualifying toumament for Zone 1 is quickly approaching.
The tourney will be held December 8 at the Morrish School in
Trail. Playoffs will begin at 6 p.m. with warm-ups at 5:30 p.m.
The format will be round robin for the first round and knock-out
for the qualifying round. These playoffs will decide who repre-
sents Zone 1 at the Winter Games in Comox on February 23-26.
The team will consist of three men and three women. All partici-
pants must be 13 to 55 years of age as of February 23,1994. All

entries can be sent to Jim King, Box 157, Genelle B.C., VOG 1G0
