The new skating rink was opened last night amid cheers, songs and music by the band. Several hundred skaters and onlookers wera present to take part in and witness the formal an‘l grand open- ing of the fine new rink, the principal features of which haue been recounted inthe columns ofthe Rzcorp in the past. * Promptly at 8 o'clock, as heretofore announced in the Recorp, the rink was formally opened to the public for skat- ing. Mayor Wallace made the opening address, which was brief and appropri- ate. It wasstated by the mayor: that acureful examination of the building had been made by experts, and the to be ly safe. But the directore a the rink company have decided to place iron girders upon each of the great arches in order to more securely bind the trussea together and givethem greater powers of resistance from above and without. There were about 300 peopleon the ice last night, and at least three times that many can be accommodated without dis- comfort. ‘ There were a great’ many spectators outlast night, who were comfortably seated in the gallery, on each side of the rink, The: management dectared the opening a grand success, and expreseed the utmoat satisfacion in the aerated fu- ture of the rink. The curling stories have not i ar rived for the ‘curlers, s0 thatthe game for this evening will not take place. The stones ara expected’ daily, and as’ soon as they get here practice games will be . Severe Fall on Ice This morning, while going to get hie ance is the place and manner of stopping the trains for paesengera to get on and off thecars. There isan old hand car standing on the platform near the de- pot, and almost every train is so stopped as to bring the steps of the cars directly over this old bund car, and the hand car top is about four inches higher than the car steps, so that it ia impossible for a lady to get out or into a car without as- sistance. The Mountain Lion. Fred M, Wells, formerly of Rossland but later of Republic, is in the city on a visit. Mr. Wells is one of the incorpor- ators of the company owning the Moun- tain Lion ciain, of Republic camp, and he is most enthusiastic of the claims’ greatness, and wonderful feature. It speaking of it lust evening to a Recorp man, he said: ‘The Mountain Lion is the very biggest mine on the reservation, and I believe the largest on the Pacific coast. The ore body as now mncovered, tested and proven, is 600 feet long 800 feet deep and 30 feet wide, and still the limit of its extensions have not been reached at any point, and its fature status is only problematical as yet, as all cuttings are still in solid ore, and ofan average value of $95° per ton. These statements Icam vouch for, as I have personally made examinations and teats throughout the mine.” Grand Musical and Free Presentation Entert mental music upon the big hanjo and little whistle, and other instrumental and chin music, recitations, etc. me everybody, and bring all your kinfolks.
