So far, both the mine owners: and the miners have given him a_ very clear exposition of the subject, the mine owners at Nelson having taken particular pains in this respect. It would be well for those of Rossland to follow their example and to see that Mr. Clute obtains the fullest information on the affairs of this camp, which differ in many particu- lars from those prevailing in the camps already visited. The repre- sentatives of the miners are sure to be on hand and it is to the general! interest that the whole question should be squarely before him, from the standpoint of both capital and labor. IT IS NO PARALLEL. It is evident to one: who takes a cool view of events that many ofthe London newspaper editors lost their heads when they received the news of General Buller's defeat. One of the worst evidences of this fact was the attempt to draw a parallel be- tween the South African war and the American war of independence. There is not a single point in which the two wars are similar. The American colonists fought for the principle of ‘‘na taxation without representation.” Great Britain has recognized the principle in the gov- ernment of her culonies, and is now battling for it against the Boers. The American war was King George’s war and was carried on against the wishes of the great mass of the British people, who expres- sed their dissent so forcibly that, even in those days of incomplete representation in parliament, the king had to yield to public opinion. The present war is emphatically the pecple’s war, as the readiness with which they volunteer their services proves. The American war was carried on mainly by means of hired mercenaries from Germany. The present is carried on by the best blood and sinew of the whole British nation, which, undaunted by defeat, rushes eagerly to renew the fight. Not only is the whole nation aroused toa pitch of deter- mination never before equalled since the days of Napoleon, but the young nations which have grown up in Canada and Australia are eagerly offering their sons to aid their motner country. The United States, the very nation which is compared to the Boers in this ab- surd parallel, is now in hearty sym- pathy with Great Britain, recogniz- ing that she is now contending for the very principle which she resisted in her struggle with them. This sympathy has shown itself in the most practical manner, for hundreds of Americans have volunteered for service in the British army. The British nation is fighting the battle of freedom in this war, if ever it did, and it will win because it is determined and united. Every lover of freedom recognizes that the British are right, and those who sympathize with the Boers do so because they hate Britain for her war devotion to the cause of freedom | and are jealous of her greatness. Every reverse should only strength- en her det i and redoubl which has:made South: Africa a. hell tor the British for twenty years, and which can only be -extinguished by the extinction of the sham republics which have committed it. THE MEN. .FOR THE WORK. Should the Dominion government decide to include a body of. cavalry or mounted infantry in the second contingent to go to South Africa, it could be drawn from. no better source than theypresent and former members of the ‘northwest mounted police. These men are trained scouts, who are able to move either in a body or to act alone or in. par- ties of two or three. They are as mobile as the Boers themselves and can act independent of any base. of supplies for a period as long as two weeks, taking no supplies except hard tack and p which S.cents, for Lreasury purposes, only, and Treasury Shares’: : : 4 cents, which is all intact. Rossland, B.C. they prepare themselves from dried beef. With this food in their .sad- dlebags and their blankets: tied be- hind their saddles, they are traired to go off for long distances. They are all crack shots and are the equals of the Boers in marksman- ship. Another important point in favor of this force is the character of their horses. The British cavalry, with their heavy camp outfit. are obliged to keep near the end of a railroad as their base of supplies. Their horses, though splendid animals in a charge and making a fine appear- ance on review, require hay to. feed them and are used to warm stables. They are therefore liable to fall sick from wet and exposure. The horses used by the mounted police, on the other hand, are small, stocky: ani- mals picked from the hardy western breed. They are trained to long marches, are accustomed to feed on the grass the country affords and do not yield readily to cold or hun- ger. They are therefore cut out exactly for the rough and tumble work of scouting on the. African veldt. All the horses now in the service could well be spared,as they could be quickly replaced in Can- ada. The country in which the mount- ed police serve is. very similar in many respects to that in which the British are now fighting. The veldt has the same general characteristics as the prairie.and the -kopjes cor- respond to the buttes ofthe west, being islands of rock. which. have resisted decay. amid. an ocean otf rolling plain. Their sides are cov- ered with piles of slide rock, rang- ing from the size of a man’s head upwards, as are the sides of the American buttes. The. d Rrocten ay Cafe. —S=— A' New Claim oe.-THE.... They quietly: sat down in the church to wait for the func- tion in which they were to take part. The Sunday school children hav- ing left the church and the boy who was blowing the organ with them, the superintendent, who also acts as organist, was at a loss for somebody to furnish wind during the wedding.
