In discussing the mining situation T. G. Blackstock of the War Eagle- Centre Star, said: ‘I am satisfied that mining properties in the United States anywhere west of the Rocky mountains can be bought cheaper than similar properties in Canada. In other words the American gov- ernment gives a better chance to miners than the Canadian govern- ment does. This statement is really against my own interest, for 1 own no mining properties in this coun- try, although I hope to some day. Your people, too, will sell for less money than you can buy for any- where else. The reason for the great boom in copper properties just now is, I think, partially ac- counted for by the scarcity ot other investments and also because of the present high price of copper.”— New York Tribune. OUR ESTEEMED CONTEMPORARY On the return trip yesterday the passenger coach on Mr. Shaugh- nessy’s special train was derailed on the switchback. No o1e was hurt, but the president declined to continue his journey in it, taking a caboose instead. It is to be hoped that he will not get as far down as the brake-heam before he finishes his journey.—Cascade Record. Every two or three days for the past six weeks announcements have been made that Eber C. Smith would commence the publication of a weekly newspaper at Phoenix. Does Eber C. expect a committee of the people of this town to go down to Grand Forks with a brass band and circus wagon and bring him up here? Does he want a sort of triumphal procession with the people of the town lining the streets to witness the arrival of Eber, the only, the transcedent one and his Palouse outfit. If you are coming, Eber, why in thunder don’t you get a move on? There is plenty of at- mosphere around Pheonix for even Eber C. Smith to breathe in. There are no strings on you, Eber, and no one intends to bonus you to stay away. The people of Phoenix are very anxious to know if there is any fire behind so much smoke. Come along, Eber, and don't for- get to pay the customs duties on your plant.—Phoenix News. The splendid fighting done by “Tommy Atkins” on so prominent a military stage as that supplied by a Boer war will be worth much mil- itary prestige to Britain, There has been a tendency in the camps of the war lords of the continent to belittle the effectiveness of the British army. It is an’ exceedingly small force when compared on paper with the monster establishments commanded at Berlin, Paris, St. Petersburg, Vienna and Rome. Then it is a long time since it has faced a foe equipped with implimentsof modern warfare. ‘'Good enough against savages” has been a sneer too often heard for the comfort of Britons. But now, with all the world watch- ing, ‘‘Tommy” has shown that he can charge up to and over the crest of hills defended by the best ‘‘cover fighters” in the world with all his old irresistable vim and dash. He skill nor his success. ~ -Montrea | Star. The best saddle horses at the Montana; phone 6.
