If you are feeling the November blues, we have a new book that can be highly recommended as a splendid tonic, That most popular of news- paper columnists, Art Buch- wald, has just published anoth- er collection of his witty com- mentaries on the current scene, ‘The Buchwald Stops Here’. From his tongue-in-cheek intro- duction about how well he doesn't know President Carter, to one of his closing articles in which he says the only way he knows he's not a member of the CIA is the fact that his salary is way below the prevailing CIA rate for reporters, it’s a laugh- a-minute. Dr. Theodore Rubin has written a very comforting book for people who would like to lose weight and find dieting difficult. ‘Alive, Fat and Thin- ning in America’ is a compas- sionate and revolutionary ap- proach to weight loss. He says that fat people in our society are made to hate themselves. Overeating is a compen- sation for this hatred and the results lead to more self-hate, soa vicious circle is formed. Dr. Rubin is convinced that ob- sessive dieting is destructive of the psyche. He believes self- acceptance and self-esteem are far more important than a slender profile and his recipe for thinning is a benevolent process in which the dieter learns to like himself, to accept himself as a ‘fat and alive’ person who is choosing to have a lighter body. The latest addition to our collection of weaving books, ‘The Weaving, Spinning and Dyeing Book’ by Rachel Brown, is hailed as the most complete and specific how-to-do-it book ever published on these sub- jects. : It contains instructions for using the Navajo, backstrap, treadle, inkle and hopi belt looms; all the finishing-off tech- niques; everything about spin- ning from picking a good fleece to choosing the best equipment; master plans for designing; recipes for dyes, ete. It con: cludes with hints and informa- tion on how to make a living out of weaving and lists suppliers of materials and equipment. A good book to have around at this time of year, Castlegar Public Library by Gail Brown, shows you hundreds of exciting new ways to turn sweater fabric into unique fashions, home acces- sories or fun gifts. You don't have to knit sweaters any more, sewing knit fabrics is , much quicker and easier. ‘Looking Terrific’ by Emily Cho is a very helpful book for any woman who'd like her clothes to express her person- ality and improve her appear- ance. Few women are satisfied with their figures and this book contains many tips on the right and wrong clothes for different figure types; on the styles which suit different facial fea- tures‘and' personalities, =‘ It’s fascinating to discover how much of a person's inner feelings can be read from the clothes she habitually wears or opts to wear on certain occa- sions. A hostess book with a difference, ‘Gourmet Bouquet’ by Julia Weinberg, is full of trepieces which are both edible and a feast to the eye. Ex- quisite bouquets which appear at first glance to be flowers turn out to be radishes, arti- choke hearts, red cabbage and endive. Shrimps, cocktail sausages, rosettes of thinly sliced beef, egg halves and olives can ‘bloom” deliciously as the cen- trepiece for a buffet meal. The only drawback would seem to be the guests’ reluctance to spoil the appearance of the arrangement by eating any of it! . The story of Emma Hamil- ton, Lord Nelson's paramour, is a fascinating one, and who better to tell it than that popular historical _ novelist, Norah Lofts. In this well- illustrated book, Ms. Lofts shows how the humble country girl with no education managed to become the wife of a British ambassador and the toast of royal courts, and to capture the heart of England's famous hero. Joyce Carol Oates’ new novel, ‘Son of the Morning’ is the story of a man born to be an evangelist whose success, and playing the pianois never given to her husband, but instead is focussed on her son. He grows up gifted, intelligent and suc- cessful, but doomed to destroy everything he loves. The favorite children's author, Judy Blune, has written her second novel for adults— this time, a touching and hilarious story of a housewife’s discovery of herself. She real- izes her successful marriage isa glossy facade, with the reality of a dull, predictable husband and a stale lifestyle beneath it. So she decides to do something about it—and how! A compellingly moving story of disaster and revenge, ‘The Shipkiller' by Justin Scott, is the story of one man’s fight to convince authorities that a lethal super tanker, carrying one million tons of crude oil, has ruthlessly run down his small craft in order to keep to its rigorous schedule, His efforts to pursue the tanker and bring ‘its single- minded, irresponsible captain to justice and thus prevent an almost inevitable disaster, make nail-biting reading. CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, November 2, 1978 Pulpit & Pew With Rev. TED BRISTOW I look forward to Mondays, It's my day off. A day at home working around the place, An evening at home just to enjoy home. On Monday evening re- cently, I turned on the tele- vision just to see what was on. I. don’t watch that much TV, but when I do, I usually enjoy it, It's a way of relaxing with a good laugh or two, A program was just be- ginning about the goings-on ata radio station. I had seen what I think was the first of this new series, and it was packed full of laughs. I lay back (reclining on the chesterfield is my favorite TV-watching position) ready for another half-hour of humor. It started off pretty good, But then they got into some subjects I've been seeing too much of on television lately. It turned out the two running jokes ‘of the program were going to be about a sex-change operation that didn't happen" .and a sports reporter barred “from a team locker room because he was suspected to be a homosexual, Ha, hal Good family fun for early evening television, I've got nothing against airing such subjects, if it's done in good taste, with respect for people involved in the subject, and with some good purpose. But when the only point is that story-writers think they can keep viewers watching by jok- ing about such subjects, forget The whole campaign (or so it seems) to use sexual subjects to increase audience ratings might just backfire. I turned off the program, and I don't think I'll bother watching it again. I'm not concerned for my- self. I can find other, probably better, things to do with an evening at home. I'm a little concerned for my children. They're in bed during evening TV program- ming right now, but they're getting older, and will even- tually be up during these hours. Besides, such programs often end up as re-runs during chil- dren's viewing hours, It's not that I'm afraid of my children hearing about sex- change operations and homo- sexuality and pre-marital sex and all the rest. They're going to hear about it anyway. It's just that I'd like them to hear about it in a tasteful, way. T'm glad I'm already in the habit of teaching my children to take television lightly. I like to poke fun at an advertisement, to point out how the program tries to make them feel a certain way (notice how the background music tells you when to feel sad, frightened, andall the rest), and above all, how what we see on television is not real life. was a healthy eye- opener to my children to see that Mike on All in the Family is actually bald! It underlined my point that television is a made-up story, not real life. I fully realize that tele- vision is here to stay. And I still like a lot of what TV shows us. But I'm worried about the power TV has over our minds, - and I'd like to see us all being more careful about what we watch, and especially about what our children watch.
