Al Brown suggested a “dry” grad- uation could be every bit as fun as one with alcohol. And at least eight Stanley Humphries students know that to be true. “All we drank was pop and water and we had a blast,” said Jodie Anderson, one of the students who went to Northern Idaho for an end-of- school celebration. “Originally there were a lot more people who were going to come on the trip, but most of them pulled out for whatever reasons they had,” she said. “But that’s okay. They missed out on a lot of fun.” With the help and support of school superintendent Terry Wayling, the SHSS_ staff, Johnny’s Grocery, Panagopou- los Pizza and the Drug and Al- cohol Task Force, Anderson and her fellow grads made the long haul to Lake Coeur d’Alene to see the sights. “I wasn’t really keen on go- ing to stand in some mud hole around a fire and watch every- one make a fool of them- selves,” Anderson said. “We know that traditional dry grads don’t work, so I end- ed up getting a petition up finding out who would support a trip like this.” More than 70 kids signed, but support for the project dwindled as the departure date grew close. But the kids who went are glad they did. “I wouldn’t change it for anything,” Anderson said of her two-day trip. “It was a great alternative to the tradi- tional grad parties.” Aboard a boat on Lake Coeur d’Alene, a handful of Stanley Humphries students enjoyed a different kind of grad that was void of any ASOtE 4 ~\ME G 365-5304 SUNFEST WEEK — SNACK SPECIAL \y 2 Pieces of golden $ delicious chicken with AB your choice of fries, 3 jojo's or freshly for only made salads Remember anytime is Chicken Time 2816 Columbia Ave. 601-18th St. Castlegar 365-3368 Not just another insurance agency ... The B.C. Government is outraged by a U.S. International Trade Commission decision, al- lowing a 6.51 per cent tariff on Canadian softwood lumber to stay put. Saying Canada is dumping subsidized lum- ber pout of the 49th parallel, the trade com- mission ruled that American producers were being injured by foreign imports. “The ruling is a mockery of fair play and is the kind of-decision we have come to expect from the protectionist American administra- tive process,” Forest Minister Dan Miller stat- ed in a news release. A spokesperson for the U.S. Coalition for Fair Lumber Imports, Olberg says there’s no juris- diction for a Canadian appeal. “There's a system in place in Canada that’s fundamentally different than ours, and that’s fine, until those products come into the U.S.,” Olberg said frdm San Francisco. The province says it will decide how to deal with the decision after the ITC officially files the report on July 6. Miller has been reported saying that he will challenge the decision, no matter the costs. The U.S. ruling is expected to cost B.C. lum- ber producers $150 million. Why rent? . Minister attacks Castlegar doctors Glen Freeman NEWS REPORTER Health Minister Elizabeth Cull wants to set the record straight. Responding to comments made by Castlegar Dr. Jon Van Vliet Wednesday to The News, Cull said “it’s obvious that he has not read (Bill 71).” Cull even went so far as to say Van Vliet is trying to “mis- lead the public” with his state- ments. Cull pointed out that doctors are saying the pro- posed medical spending limit of $1.27 billion is only two per- cent over last year’s amount. “In actual fact that amount is 4.7 per cent higher than what was spent last year. That’s a $59 million increase in spending,” she said. Cull also said that special warrants would be made should an epidemic occur and that B.C. would be the eighth province to audit medical records — not the first as claimed by the doctors. “(Bill 71) would give doc- tors, the public and govern- ment equal power on decision making in B.C.’s medical sys- tem.” B.C. Medical Association president. Steve Hardwicke said “Ms. Cull is more con: cerned with her image than the bill.” Hardwicke said local doc- tors know what they are say- ing, adding that the bill is “an incredibly devastating act for health care.” MON.-THURS. 11:30 A.M.-MIDNIGHT FRIDAY-SATURDAY 11:30 A.M.-1:30 A.M.
