Ed Mills SPORTS EDITOR The Castlegar Rebels will ice a hockey team next season, said the Junior B club’s outgoing presi- dent. : “It’s official, the Rebels are going to be operating through the 1992-93 season,” said Russ Rilcof, who had been president of the Kootenay International Junior Hockey League team for the past two years. Rilcof said the decision not to ask the league for a year’s leave of absence was made at a meeting of the executive Monday night at the Community Complex. He said the announcement became possible after the team secured a coach and a new president for the coming season. “The deciding factor was that we just didn’t want to see junior hockey take a year’s leave of absence, because that usually means demise,” he said. Rilcof said the coach and president will be announced within the next two weeks. Speculation in local hockey circles has Gord Walker resuming his role as coach that he took at the end of last season. The new president is rumored to be local slo-pitch association president John Phillips. Neither Walker nor Phillips could be reached for comment Tuesday. The KIJHL will get the news at its annual general meeting in Creston June 5. = "92 News file photo Current and future Castlegar Rebels’ players can look forward to playing hockey in Castlegar this winter after getting the word Monday that the team will not fold.
