A BURBANK, CALIF, (AP) — His official birthday is June 9, 1934 but you know how actors lie about their ages. ‘And Donald Duck, that long suffering second string to Mickey Mouse, is no exception. Donald's beginnings could be dated back to 1933, when cartoonists at Walt Disney studiod first began drawing the feathered character. Or he could have originated earlier in the century when Clarence Nash learned to imitate the animals he heard in the Missouri countryside. . The Disney people picked June 9, 1934 as Donald’s official birthday, because that's when he made his film debut in a Silly Symphony cartoon, The Wise Little Hen. His birthday is getting plenty of hoopla, with cele- brations at the Disney theme parks in California, Florida and Tokyo. Much attention is also being given to Nash, the voice of Donald Duck, who can still quack up a storm at 79. “Tve done Donald in French, Portuguese and Spanish and once in German,” Nash said in an interview with The Associated Press. “For Tokyo Disneyland, I even did him in Japanese.” Nash, whose smallish frame and gentle manner makes him resemble one of the Seven Dwarfs, retired when he turned 65, but he still returns to the studio for an oceasional job. At the beginning Howard was the star, but he willingly let the Fonz grow because he knew it was good for the shew. ‘The whole thing, he says, was like a dream come true. “I didn’t know to what extent I'd be successful,” he says. “But I worked every day as an actor. I saw a lot of my colleagues waiting tables or opening tree trimming services. A lot of us dream about this, but I was able to do it.” He says his three-year-old daughter, Zoe Emily, now recognizes him as the Fonz and gives him the thumb. “It's as natural as the day is long that people are on television and in the house,” he says of his daughter's view of reality. I take a lot of home movies. I really chronicle everything so that the kids can see five years from now what they were like, who they met, what they did. In this three-hour version, which CBS will telecast Wednesday, Rhys- Davies plays a babu (an English-educated , Indian clerk) who befriends Kim. The movie, filmed largely in India, also stars Peter O'Toole and Bryan Brown, and Ravi Sheth in the title role. “It's the story of a boy who grows up in India with no father — but three fathers,” he said. “Bryan Brown, the Afghan horse trader, who represents the worldly and adventurous side. Peter, O'Toole, the lama, who rep- resents the spiritual side. The babu, whom I play, is’ certainly the most Western. He represents the intellec- tual side.” In the role, Rhys-Davies spent two months in the dusty Kulu Valley, at the edge of the Himalayan foot- hills. “We ate a lot of chicken,” he said. “We ate chicken every day. We could not eat beef because of the Hindus and we couldn't eat pork because of the Muslims. Once in a while, though, we had lamb.” A large, bearded man with a booming baritone voice, he haf played a wide variety of roles. In Raiders of the Lost Ark be was Indiana Jones’ Arab helper. In Shogun he was the Portuguese navi- gator. In Reilly, Ace of Spies, he was a Russian. In Ivanhoe he was a Norman knight. “I studied the dialect when I played Gamal Nasser for Sadat,” he said. “But by and large when you do these nationalities you just listen to your friends. Actors are always doing silly voices.” When Rhys-Davies first did repertory theatre, “old directors used to say to me, ‘John, there are two kinds of parts. Good parts and chal- lenging parts. John, I've got another challenge for you this week.’ I was never the TWO-HOUR FILM handsome, dashing leading man. I tend to play the character roles and frequent- ly play the villain. “There aren't that many actors in the world who can get away with this sort of thing. Most actors tend to play themselves and select and reject roles along those lines. The rest of us tend to get the challenges. The pace and drive of a play depends on the energy of the villain. T've always had a lot of energy. I'm fat and noisy, which are my two chief characteristics.” He said he keeps working because “you don’t get any better unless you practise.” “Good work is rather like a magical bank account. The more you work, the more you demand of yourself, the more there is in your account. If someone offers me a small but interesting part and I have a week or so I'd rather work because the mistakes I make there are the mistakes I won't make the next time.” Welby back once again LOS ANGELES (AP) — Actor Robert Young did not intend to retire when he finished his Marcus Welby, M.D. series in 1976, but he found himself working less and less. “[ hadn't thought about retirement one way or an- other,” said Young, 77. “I've never been idle any time in my career. He starred in The New Spirit for the Treasury Department. His most memorable war film was Der Fuehrer'’s Face, which infuriated the German high command because of its razzberries following Heil Hitler! After 50 years with a cantankerous duck as his alter ego, Clarence Nash remains as enthusiastic as a starlet. Although he has done it thousands of times, he tells his career story as if the events had just happened. Nash si imitating animals as a boy, and after performing on radio in Hollywood he was asked to audition at the Disney studio. “That's our talking duck,” Walt Disney declared after hearing Nash perform. The most versatile of the Disney voices, Nash provided frogs, crickets and bluebirds for The Old Mill, and canaries for Snow White. He also voiced Daisy (nee Donna) Duck and the nephews. Alan Young did Uncle “In all my years of working for Walt we had only one argument,” Nash said. “My name got in print as being the voice of Donald Duck, and Walt called me into his office and bawled me out. WASHINGTON (AP) — Walt Disney Productions is treating criticism of its tele- vision programming like water running off Donald Duck's back. The company says it isn't going to change anything in response to the National Coalition of Tele- vision Violence, which thinks shows on Disney Channel are too violent. Donald Duck, in fact, comes in for clothespins to silence his three rambunc- tious nephews in the cartoon Donald's Golf Game. The nephews, equally vio- lent, get back by sinking Donald's boat, tying him up and stuffing a golf ball into his mouth. All told, the coalition said it found 18 incidents of ciolence in each hour of cartoons on the Disney Chan: nel and nine in an hour of non-cartoons. In 43 hours of prime time the coalition recorded 55 murders and 57 attempted murders. “I was shocked at how vio- lence was shown as the only way to deal with problems,” said Dr. Thomas Radecki, who says 27 studies have shown that violent cartoons increase violent attitudes and behavior in children. FEW COMPLAINED But in Burbank, Calif., Disney Productions said that in its first year on the air the channel got only six com plaints of violerice in 30,000 letters, from viewers. “Programming decisions will continue to be based on the preference of our audi- ence,” said the channel, not ing that it has-been endorsed by both the U.S. National Education Association and the National Parent-Teach- ers Association. David Hostetter, Washing- ton direetor of the coalition, said the group wasn’t sin- gling Disney out for criti- cism. He said the network was the 31st it has monitored in a systematic sampling of all television aimed at chil dren. And he praised Disney Productions for keeping sex and vulgar language off the air and for its large amount of educational material — 28 per cent of programming, second only to the Public Broadcasting System. Nonetheless, the coalition found fault not only with Donald Duck's maltreatment of his nephews but with the Three Little Pigs, for pouring boiling water on the Big Bad Wolf. Mickey Mouse was also faulted for fighting with a mother eagle for her eggs. All told, the coalition rated only 27 per cent of the car- toons and 68 per cert of the other shows as suitable for children. Cosby to star in series LOS ANGELES (AP) — Bill Cosby, who won an ‘Emmy for his role in I Spy, will return to weekly tele- vision as the star of a new half-hour comedy series on NBC.
