; e2__ Castlegar News _ oscember 21,1983 Jets By GERRY SUTTON ‘The Canadian Press It was said in jest, but rookie coach Barry Long made a recent observation that makes sense to Winnipeg Jets fans who groan everytime Wayne Gretzky steps on the ice. “We might as well decline penalties when we play them,” Long said of Edmonton Oilers, who could call the Jets their cousins in the National Hockey League. “Gretzky and (Jari) Kurri are never thinking defence. “They are always looking for a chance to break away. Unless you work the puck deep on them, they'll slip behind you and wait for their chance. This is one mystery we must solve.” To solve that mystery, however, the Jets and Long might need the talents of a Matt Houston. The Knight Rider might also come in handy, maybe even Simon and Simon. The Oilers have scored 17 short-handed goals this season and eight of them have come against the Jets. Gretzky, the Oilers’ smooth centre who as usual is making a runaway of the NHL points race, has 12 goals and eight assists for 20 points in five games this season against the Jets, all wins.
