As a result, most passenger vehicle owners in B.C. will pay between $30 and $100 more for their automobile insur- ance in 1993. Percentage changes for individual motorists will vary depending on the cov- erage they choose and their claims ex- perience, however increases for three quarters of claim-free motorists will be less than 10 per cent. According to ICBC President Robyn Allan, the driving force behind rates is the combined impact of the number and cost of claims made by BC motorists. Allan said, “Projections earlier in the year indicated that a premium rise of 14 per cent or greater might be required in e1 993 if no new steps were taken to con- trol costs. “We found that prospect unaccept- able — ‘business as usual’ was simply not an option.” She said the news for B.C.’s worst dri- vers will not be good. “For example dri- vers with two ‘at-fault’ claims in 1992 could face increases of 120 per cent or more in 1993.” Other major Autoplan changes an- nounced by Allan include higher mini- mum deductibles for collision and com- prehensive coverage. All changes are effective immediate- ly (today) for new policies and from Jan. 1, 1993 on renewal of existing poli- cies. Major changes to Autoplan include: + Premiums will increase for basic and third party coverage, including the com- pulsory $200,000 in third party liability coverage, no-fault accident benefits and Underinsured Motorist Protection. The average increase will be about $80. + For the second year in a row, pre- miums for collision coverage will fall. This represents average savings to DOWNTOWN SHELL REPAIR & SERVICE BCAA APPROVED «ip 365-6133 975 Columbia Ave. Castlega: .C. In addition, the minimum collision deductible will be raised to $200. * Due to the continuing rise in theft, vandalism and fire claims, comprehen- sive coverage premiums will rise an av- erage $6 for most motorists. The mini- mum deductible for comprehensive claims will go to $100 from $50. Comprehensive deductibles will now apply to claims for fire and lightning damage and for the total loss of a vehi- cle due to theft. * Those making no-fault claims for weekly disability benefits (people who caused accidents resulting in injuries to themselves) will now have their pay- ments begin on the eighth calender day of disability. This brings B.C. in line with other Canadian jurisdictions. + For all new policies, the Underin- sured Motorist Protection included with basic Autoplan coverage will be $1 mil- lion instead of the current $2 million. Ex- isting policies will have the higher limit until they expire in 1993. Prior to 1992, when UMP was an op- tion, all occupants of a motorist’s vehicle would share the amount of any UMP coverage in the event of an accident caused by an underinsured motorist. Now, the basic coverage includes the full UMP limit for each occupant of a vehicle and research indicates that $1 million in coverage is sufficient. However, motorists wishing addition- al protection will be able to purchase an extra $1 million UMP coverage. * Responding to public demand, the corporation is introducing a new policy to cover the replacement cost for most nat- ural gas and propane vehicle conver- sions. While ICBC’s cost cutting measures have had an impact on premiums need- ed for 1993, Allan said the greatest sav- ings will still result when motorists do their part to prevent accidents and crime-related losses.
