The difference is that bulimic women tend to have a normal weight, whereas anorexic women tend to be underweight When someone’ starves the intake of energy is not enough to fuel the body for its daily metabol- ic needs. The brain can only use glucose for its function - It cannot use energy from fat stores. During a fast the body breaks down mus- cle to provide the glucose energy for the brain, Fat stores are pre served, while muscle protein is lost. The body also stops all non essential metabolic activity, to con- serve energy, and the basal metabolic rate decreases, This leaves a person feeling weak and tired and lethargic and they may become intolerant to cold, Someone who is anorexic may complain of poor concentration and difficulty sleeping and her-menses usually stop. They had always had a feeling of the Kootenays as they have relatives living here who expounded the virtues of this area. They chose Salmo as a place where they could feel more comfortable and he could work without interruptions. Raney's works range in size from three inches to wall-sized hangings and floor-standing metal sculptures worth from $10 to $5,000. Many of his works focus on fish, animals and birds, illus- trating his connections with the natural habitat, and mythical drag- ons, focusing on his creative imagination. Utilizing welding techniques and mainly using steel, his products dre in demand throughout Ontario and he is cur- rently shipping them from his workshop in Salmo. He has recently contracted with the Craft Connection in Nelson and the Arts’ Desire in Kaslo so he will be selling through those outlets local- ly. He also displayed a piece at the Juried Art Show at the National Exhibition Centresin Castlegar. “AlthOugh ‘the early 80°s was tough for the arts community, I have been able to make a living from my art,” Raney states, “And I hope the expansion of sales in this region will be successful.” He calls himself a conservationist and the destruction of the rural environment in Ontario forced him to chose an area relatively remote from the urban mind set and feels that Salmo is the place. Raney has worked with the Arts community in Ontario, hav- ing been a co-founder of the Lin- -«toln Regional Arts Council and its first President. He was instru- mental in starting an arts collec- tive and was chief organizer of the Niagara Studio Tour. He has joined the Salmo Arts Council and this organization looks for- ward to his involvement When treating women with eating disorders one of the aims is to normalize their eating habits. They are encouraged to eat three meals a day, and to throw away the scale. The accent is on eating for health not for weight control. Those with anorexia are encour- aged to gain weight - not to extent that they become fat, but enough that their health is not compro- mised. Usually this is a weight just less than the ideal weight for height and age. People who are bulimic should also eat three meals a day whether they binge or Western society reinforces the fear of fatness not, Often understanding why they binge allows them to control their intake more easily. One of the most important aspects of treatment is to address the problem of low self esteem. Patients are taught ways of deal- ing with the cultural issues of diet and weight, and learn to view their bodies differently They are taught how to solve problems and cope with stress without resorting to dieting, or bingeing. The need to leam that self worth does not depend on body size and weight. Potato lover or an a bud- get? I'm now.42. Finally I have something important to say and I hope you'll print it Last week, my 27-year-old cousin, “Wendy,” was robbed at 4:00 p.m. in the elevator of a large office building in the heart of town. It was Friday and payday, and she had Just cashed her paycheck. Wendy was relieved of $360 in cash, as well as a valuable wristwatch, a diamond ring and some gold earrings. She made the mistake of getting into an elevator with one man and standing in the back corner, out of reach of the alarm button. She now says she feels lucky That man could have raped or killed her if he had wanted to. Everything happened so fast she didn't have time to think about what she should do Immediately after the inci- dent, Wendy ran into the near- est office and called the Police. This is what they advised her to do to prevent another such occurrence: Be aware that elevators are favorite places for muggers. Avoid being on an elevator with one man. For example, if you board on the ground floor, wait for the next car if there is only one male and yourself. If you are alone in an elevator and it stops at the second floor and a lone male boards, get off at the next floor. Always stand near the alarm button =- just in case. If the attacker has any kind of weapon -- a gun or a knife -- do not fight with him to protect your purse or jewelry. Surren der everything at once, but scream as loud as you can and try to get-to the alarm button Try to geta good look at your attacker, Take note of any identifying features such as tat too marks, scars, earrings, etc Call the police or 911 imme diately after the incident. Even though you may fee] perfectly OK, consider counseling to help you recover from the trau- ma. Wendy said the impact didn't hit her urtil the next day and then she fell apart. I know this is a very long let- ter, Ann, but it could be a life- Saver to someone who is totally inexperienced. Thanks for let- ting me pay you back for all the years of good advice. -- Wendy's Cousin in Chicago Dear Cousin: I'm grateful to you for a letter that could be the Most important thing iillions of people will read today Thank you for writing Dear Ann Landers: Please tell me what you think about this. I am too embarrassed to ask anyone for fear they will think I'm some kind of a nut Yesterday I went to "Dr. Smith" for my annual checkup. He has been our family doctor for 14 years, and we love and respect him. In the middle of the exam, he began to probe a delicate area (inside) and his instrument Pinched me. I don't know what came over me, Ann, but I sat Tight up and bit his arm. Dr. Smith was furious and wouldn't stop yelling at me. I tied to apologize but he contin- ued to scream. I felt like a 5- year-old. I don't want'to go to another doctor, but Dr. Smith may refuse to see me again. Any advice? -- J.R. Dear J.R.: When a man bites a dog, that's news. When a woman bites a doctor, that's out of the ordinary to say the least I'd say you both overreacted Before your next physical, write @ note to Dr. Smith and Promise to wear a muzzle. If he has a sense of humor, it-might help. ++* The Castlegar Sun ~ March 21/April 20 an exceptional week for anything to do with property, family and the domestic side of your life. it will be a fine time for looking at ew Property, if you're intending to move shortly.
