Valhalla Society charges Clayoquot decision made under pressure Also accuses Harcourt government of corruption DAN CARLSON For The Castlegar Sun The Valhalla Society is in an uproar over the B (eel yen i in Clayoquot Sound; the Harcourt governmeft and court system has allowed idustry to affect their deci- on concernin Practices YWICLY wth British Columbia tl tecuses the Harcourt govern- orrupt practices, Claiming that high ind resulting profits have been the main reasons for the 12-month extension placed on current logginy practices ment of lumber pric Judge Peter Seaton, ruled that the government is not in conflict of interest on the handling of affairs in the Sound Colleen McCrory, chairperson for the Valhal- la Society says otherwise. She alleges that if lumber prices were lower, the decision to extend the logging practices deadline would have had a different ending “They can destroy a whole forest in twelve months,” protests McCrory. “Harcourt is acting in the most arrogant way; he makes Vander Zalm look good.” McCrory claims the B.C government refuses to put forth proper legislation to protect British Columbian forests because of the high prices now being paid for lumber. “We're faced with the fact that MacMillan Bloedel is the B.C. government. They've given themselves 12 months to continue logging by the old standards and making profits at record rates,” claims McCrory McCrory said Seaton’s judgement was based on testimony that MacMillan Bloedel would profit very little if it had easy access to Clay oquot Sound Doug Pearce. the director of the government's Mvestthent “branch, testtfied that MacMillan Bloedel had not factored logging in Clayoquot Sound as being significant to the overall earning potential of the company McCrory also said the B.C government has been deceitful in the conveyance of key infor mation in it’s response to Commissioner Stephen Owen’s report on Clayoquot Sound “There was already a Ministry of Forests doc ument that stated new logging standards for Clayoquot Sound would be deferred fdr twelve months, yet it was kept secret nearly two months after the public response to Owen.” The reason that McCrory had given for this confusion is because the two documents came out on the same day. “The sad thing is that the public believed a new set of standards was in place, and was unaware that the industry had created a free-for- all on B.C. forests.” McCrory also accuses the Harcourt govern ment of “larding” it's 300-page document on Clayoquot Forest Practices Standards with stan- dards that have yet to be approved, and will not be enforced until'they are approved “We have 600 political prisoners in jail, serv ing up to six months of their lives for peaceful conscientious Civil disobedience,” said McCrory ;Running on empty An RCMP Highway Patrol member who wished to remain nan some fuel trouble in front of the Castlegar Airport last Wednesday night.
