NEWS FOR ADVERTISERS. The Recorp has a larger circulation in Rossland than the b do cire culation of wll the other papers pub- lished in Rossland. The Damy Recozp has more than three times the city circulation of any other daily paper published here. These are favis we chailenge any one to deny. We stand ready tu prove them. Taking circulation into consideration advertising ratea in the Dairy Recorp are more reasonable than any other medium in Rossland. Advertisers should not forget these facts. =a THE BEEF PROBLEM. The Calgary Herald, under the caption of a “Happy Medium” Points.an article, which it says, gives practical suggestions. D. W. Marsh, president of _the Western Stock G writes that stockgrowers might in some future time desire to seek a United States market for their beef, and they also might wish to import cat- tle from the United Btates to. stock our ranges or to increase ranches now in existence, and should the tariff be raised as: intimated it is almost a self-evident conclusion that the United States would meot it with a corresponding advance and thus operate eventually to tlie detriment of the stock growers in- terest. It is the belief and hope of our association that you will en- deavor to obtain for us the best measure of relief possible, and we submit the foregoing to your kind consideration and fully rely upon your judgment for an early aud equitable settlement.” “Early and equitable settlement” indeed! The mines of Kootenay are just as much entitled to consid- eration as the stockgrowers of As- siniboja and Alberts. ,They are not to be discriminated against. Beef nut fit to ship to England is uot good enough for a Rosslander to eat. and the government is not likely to pass a law that. will com- pell them to eat it. The govern- ment will not be likely to arrange a quarantine which will enable c-t- tlemen to raise the price of beef and supply an inferior quality. It is not a question so much where we get the meat as that we get the best at reasonable prices. ____—_— The fining of Ol:ie Davis and Maud Hunt $100 each for selling liquor _to Mr. Oliver, ie P., eS the ithout license, under the. existing was hardly the pro- of the gov oy, That be i i: d to the eastern boundary of Mani- toba from the Pacific Coast; “2. First because they have been allowed to’ so sell for two years, and shuuld have had proper notice to quit. Second be- cause it will be only a few weeks until Rossland will be iacorporated, and will regulate those matters Yor itself, In view of this fact these people are not likely to be driven to taking out government license and $200 will not.enrich the prov- ince suffi ly to justify it at this “Among the principal reasons set forth by our he says, “for the continuance at the ine, are, first to p the entrance of disease from stock com- ing from the United States, and second to preserve the British’ Col- umbia markets four the Canadian bred cattle of Assiniboia and Al- berta.” There is no consitieration of the Kootenays. This great mining region. must hold up the stock rowers of Assiniboia and Alberta regardless of the lack of transpor- tation. He. goes on and says: “In justification of the latter reason, I may say that present freight rates into the Kootenay district preclude our shipping into that market, against the rates of roads coming in from the United States even with a duty 6f 20 per cent added; and we believe that this home market should be pro- tected and maintained in the inter- ests of home stock growers.” Added to his i Lfish late hour changing its policy to- ward this class of people. here is nothing lost by being fair and just even with the fallen and weak, —_—___—_—_—_ The dispatch, printed elsewh and might want to goto the United Ne PACIFIC.
