Light rain fell as 1000 yellow ducklings floated down Pass Creek to the pickup spot just above the bridge. Only the first four across the finishing ine would be in the prizes. Some ducklings zinged nght al ressive as the swift current at the bend in the creek swept them toward the finish line. Others bobbed down backwards as if something upstream were more exciting than what was ahead. A few — not wanting to engage — twirled off with the eddies and sat listlessly in calm waters. Some didn’t watch where they were going and entangled themselves in overhanging tree branches or jammed onto rocks along the shore Eventually their children, and assorted others managed to haze all of the Kiwanians, FROM 1000 tickets were sold by a small band of Kiwanians in the hot days of July and early August And another small group of Kiwanians floated the ducklings and got wet on a cold day in August just to Wednesday, August 23, 1995 The Castlegar Sun Allman Brothers in peak form “TRAIN A COMIN’” Steve Earle (Stony Plain) Steve's been M.I.A. since “Shut up & Die Like An Aviator" in ‘91. Thick with rural backroad dust, “Train A Comin'” is a treat. Since 1991 Earle has been dumped by a major label and fought losing battles with drugs, booze and bad health. He bottomed out, now he's back “Train” is an acoustic album with (mostly) songs Steve wrote before his success...but he insists it is NOT an ‘unplugged’ record. “God, 1 HATE MTV” he says “I made up most of these songs before I was plugged in in the first place. This is what'I used to do every day... this ain’ part of no unplugged nothin’.” The root- sy acoustic vibe reaches for coun- try and blues fans, but it has a rock and roll swagger as well Keys: “Mystery Train Part II” and “Goodbye”. Steve Earle fell from grace, and “Train A Comin’” is his humble redemption. “A SPANNER IN THE WORKS” Rod Stewart Warner Bros.) Stony Plain) Rod’s first new music since 91's “Vagabond Heart.” “Spanner” is KEREIFF On The Town”, Mandolins and acoustic guitars evoke “Every Pic- ture Tells A Story” and “Gasoline Alley.” Stewart manages to cram all but his ghastly disco period into this single disc of new songs. Keys “Windy Town” and “Leave Virginia Alone.” “A Spanner In The Works” is a fine album in the truest sense of the word. “AIN'T HAD ENOUGH FUN” Little Feat Md This is Little Feat’s 13th album. This is country/cajun blues with heaps o soul, and I’m diggin’ it. It may be a blessing or a handicap, but this is my first Little Feat album and I must take “Fun” at face value without judg- ing it against the band's legend. Thanks to some great slide playing by Paul Barrere and/or Fred Tackett as well as the force- ful vocals of new member and longtime friend Shaun Murphy, “Fun” reminds me of Bonnie Raitt...bluessy and slick, but not oily. These grooves ooze soul, especially when compared to some of the dreck this gig forces fhe to tolerate. Keys: “Big Bang Theory” and “Blue Jean Blues” (NOT the ZZ Top song). “Ain’t Had Enough Fun” tastes like beer, Since returning to active duty in 1989, Calling “2nd Set” jewel understates the case “2nd Set” captures The Allman Brothers Band on stage and in peak form. If anyone has turned jamming into an art form, it's these guys. Here, we're treated ‘to tasty blues workouts as well as old favorites like “Jessica” and “In Memory of Elizabeth Reed.” It's seldom that a disc gives me goose bumps, but MAN!! This one felt ($) a rare $0 good I could've died last night a happy man “2nd Set” isn't an Allmans history lesson, 4 of these 8 tracks ' Originated with last year's “Where It All Begins”. Execut ing their dual lead guitar/double drummer sound with instinctual ease, nobody can't beat these guys at their game, no way. Keys: “Where It All Begins” and “Soul Shine.” I expected to like “2nd Set”, but I didn’t count on falling in love with it! Value and quali great selection.
