I may as well take these happenings in order; chronological that is. So I shall start off with the Birchbank retirees windup. You could say that this was two celebrations in one as we were also paying our respects and birthday compliments to a very good friend, good golfer and all-round fine gen- tleman. Noland Garrison has been coming to both retirees days on the two courses now for approximately six years and misses only when he's away on holiday or business takes him away. Noland lives in the old Deep Lake road area and I · once beard him crack that he's spent so much time · in Canada that be wonders which country he's considered an alien in. Noland was 85 years young on Thursday and he said his ambition was to score his age in his round that day, adding, "but I didn't want to do it on the first nine." About a week ago be set out to walk the Rossland course and completed six of the toughest before packing it. in. Noland usually rides the · Rossland course with Alex Turner but that day Alex had gone on holiday. Now, the Birchbank group had 73 out for golf and all 73 sat down to eat. Eleven golfers had low net as Chief Buna had a 33 and the ten others were all at 34. They were Red Ius, Brick Bisaro, Harold Dixon, Gord McLaren, Bill Emery, Al Bublitz, Mike O'Donaugby, Al Rella, Romeo DiBiasio and Gerry Wanless. In the low gross category Ferro Pelligrin and George Pearson both checJ(ed in with 39's while Ray Gariepy and Bob Glover each had 42's, Georg~ Harkness was named best golfer with his 64. Fri!laY evenin& saw.approximately 350 hockey 'Jana sit ·down at the Rossland Arena for the Trailllossland game, and those fans really got their money's worth of hockey entertainment. The two teams, who have never felt any particular friendly feelings toward one another, lost no time in letting everyone know that nothing has changed in •~. They went at it head to bead. Trail had a bad first period as they took a lot of penalties, and Rossland profitted to the extent of a 4-goal lead. In the ' second Rossland caught referee Bill Savinkoff's . eye and the period ended 5-4 Rossland. Trail tied it in the third and then Rolsland went up 64. Then it was tied again, after which Rossland got three more. Trail was unable to score again as Mike McNelly played a sterling game in the Warrior net. Prior to the contest, the Warrior executive handed out some awards for services to the club over the years. Very deserved ones went to Marilyn Davis and Barb Armour while the other recipients were Jean Drake and myself. I want to . thank the club on behalf of us all for this thoughtful :: gesture. As I mentioned '1ast week it was "Old Boys" day at the Legion on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. . as Sammy Manson put on his retirees pool tourney. Everyone I talked to since thought this was a great effort. Between Sam, Mickey Morrow, and Frank Harris who kept things straight. Everything went smoothly. Between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. we had completed three competitions and winners were declared in each. In the A event Harvey McKay and Carl Osing beat out Bill Dahlman and Chuck Harkness. In the B it was Norm Harry and Bob Leighton triumphant over Mel Hill and Phil Bateman. In the C it was Cleve Cowland and Bill Anderson coming out on top of first Rich Watkinson · and Jack Hook and followed up with a nail-biting match over Don Froat and Bart Dudley. Bert Morrow, Cyril Dekuysscber and this writer got apeclal prizes, for what, is not quite clear. And with that I'll say, 'Til next time, then!
