CHARLES BALFOUR St. David's Anglican arch: Ch A MIRACLE STORY Last year, a seed of love. ‘and. caring was \scattered “ throughout, our province and now it is springing up fruit- fully for the benefit of-many people. The sowers of this good seed were the Anglican Dio- cese. of New Westminister and the Centre For Study of Church and Ministry, Van- couver School of Theology. The Anglicans and) VST sponsored a six-part. tele- vision program on hospice care entitled “If I Should Die Before I Wake.” Hospice is basically minis- try to the dying and the fam- ilies/eare-givers of the ter- minally ill. The program aired over the Knowledge Network (Channel 12) and was wat- ched provi and by others:t like Elizabeth and individuals in their homes. 2 Here in Galles we or- ganized:a discussion group to watch the program at the Rota Villa lounge. It Was ‘my pleasure to be the mentor for this group.- Our sessions were well at- tended by all kinds of care- givers and people interested in learning more about hos- pice care. Our group included homemakers, nurses, one doctor, one clergyman, etc. All shared their valuable in- sight and experience. Besides this, we were grateful for the interest and the‘openness of the late Maj. Norman Austin who shared how valuable hospice care was to him personally. As a result of the interest stirred up by this program ide by both’ Kub! organized. discussion groups resi- dents Seed to-form a hospice society to serve our community. y After much hard work the Castlegar Hospice Society is now a reality! I am sure that the Knowledge Network pro- gram also inspired many other communities to -begin forming hospice care soci- eties in their areas as well. This November the Angli- cans and VST are sponsoring a second: six-part series on~ hospice care. This one is en- titled “Through the Valley of the Shadow” and airs Wed- nesdays 7-8 p.m. beginning Nov. 6 on Channel 12. Program moderator Dr. W.J. Phillips says that the series will “pay special atten- tion to the ways in which various religious traditions and cultural customs and sensitivities affect the care and pastoral concern to be offered to dying people and to their families.” The Castlegar Hospice So- ciety has asked me to once again head up an organized discussion group. I'am happy to do this. If you would like to watch this excellent program in a discussion group please. con- tact me as soon as possible at 365-2271. Registering to be part of a group is free. The news is generally “pretty-depressing, but there are lots of wonderful things happening too. The spread and development of hospice care in our province and community is a wonderful miracle story: and I thank God for allowing me - and many others to have-.béen granted ‘the opportunity: of helping this miracle to hap- pen.
