from a survey I've been reading. ~—_— Castlegar News 4.013.198 “Castle ‘COMMUNITY NEWS Pulpit & Pew in Toronto. It was meant for government eyes alone, but someone used the freedom of information laws to make it public. Question: Should Canada give foreign aid because the receiving countries might become prosperious enough to buy more Canadian pro- ducts, or simply because we have a moral responsibility to help? Answer: 81 per cent said we should give foreign aid because we have a moral “ responsibility to do so. I found that encouraging. That would have been my answer too. Question: Should Canadian aid money be focussed to ward countries who will buy The survey was done last ® Penticton * Kelowna 365-7701 our goods and services, or should we have no conditions requiring them to buy Canadian? Answer: 72 per cent said we should have no conditions requiring receiving countries to buy Canadian. My answer too, but the results surprised me. Much foreign aid is now given with strings attached. “If we give you $20 million, you must spend $18 million of it buying our exports.” That sort of questionable “aid” is very common. I was glad to find that most Can- Sdians disagree with such tactics. Question: Should the ma- jority of aid go to fight poverty, or to help stimulate development? I was glad to see that 70 REMEMBER HIROSHIMA per cent of Canadians realize that poor countries need to help themselves more than HRYTZAKS CELEBRATE ANNIVERSARY left its mark on our collective mind more than I had thought. People are able to hear God's inner voice more clearly than I had given them credit for. Some people tell me the world is getting worse and worse. I have to question such a pessimistic generali- zation. I doubt that even a century ago rich countries had the will to help poor countries the way they do now. I'm quite sure that 200 years ago government and public opinion would have almost unanimously said, “Let ‘em starve!” Eugene and Susanna Hrytzak celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their home in Castlegar July 19 with their family, relatives and friends who presented them with gifts. The were married July 19, 1996 at Mount Carmel Church in Dafoe, Sask. and moved to Nelson in 1937 where they lived until 1942. They then moved to Victoria where they resided until 1946 when they moved to Taghum. In 1968 they moved to Nelson where they lived until 1970. At that time they moved to Castlegar where they now reside. They were visited during the month of July by people from Surrey, Kelowna, Nelson, Burnaby, Saska- toon, Raymore, Sask., and Spirit River, Alta. They also received a phone call from Mrs. Hrytzak’s eldest sur- viving brother in | Wrayerd, Sask. They from Gov. Gen.
