Most cancers linked to tobacco use More than 90 per cent of oral cancers are caused dir tetly by tobacco in one form or another, Dr. Robert Let nick told a recent meeting of the local Cancer Society. Dr. Letnick, now practis- ing dentistry in Castlegar, has spent several years with the armed forces where he found the incidence of oral cancer to be extremely high. Cancers of the mouth and throat do not cause pain, and often a patient is not aware that he has a problem until it is discovered by his dentist, Dr. Letnick said. In other news, Cancer Society president Ruby Mar. sh announced the B.C. Soci ety now has a toll free line 1-800-663-4242. This tele phone line can be used to ob- tain information on lodge services available to cancer patients, for asking advice on diet or quit-smoking pro- grams, and for getting the name of local contact people. Another source of help és the city library, where books are available on understand- ing and coping with cancer. 1 An effort is being made to have’ some paperback edi- | tions on the bookstands in local stores. Tel's application to withdraw its Mobiltel radio telephone service has been denied by the Canadian Radio-Television and Tele. communications Commission, Kootenay West MP Bob Brisco announced this week. In a six-page decision the CRTC stated: “Based on the record of this proceeding, the commission finds that Mobil. tel service subscribers in some locations would be without a viable alternative service if Mobiltel service were withdrawn at this time. “The Commission also finds that B.C. Tel has not sufficiently considered mak ing rate adjustments to gen erate revenues that more ad equately cover its costs. In light of this, the commission has determined that Mobiltel service should not be destan dardized or withdrawn at this time.” The CRTC added that it believes that the profitability of the Mobiltel service could be improved through rate chances, and that it will consider a new rate struc ture. “If, at the end of 1988, B.C. Tel can demonstrate that, despite these measures, Mobiltel service imposes a significant burden on its gen eral body of subscribers, the commission will be prepared to reconsider whether to permit the withdrawal of this service,” the CRTC said. “L have been in touch with several constituents, loggers and truckers who work in re mote areas and depend on mobiltel for safety,” said Brisco.
