Carl’ s Drugs: sie Plaza z.,|Crestbrook earnings drop Crestbrook Forest Industries Ltd, has recorded net earnings of $5.9 million during the first quarter of 1988, a drop of $885,000 compared to the same period last year. Sakae Hosaka, chairman of the board and chief executive officer, and Stuart A. Lang, president and chief operating officer, blamed the drop on wood products. “The decline in overall profitability is directly attributable to wood pruducts,” Hosaka and Lang said in a prepared release. “The average selling price of lumber in U.S. dollars for the first quarter of 1988 was approximately equal to that of the first quarter of 1987. In spite of these conditions, each of our three sawmills (Canal Flats, Cran. brook and Elko), on a fully-consolidated basis, have gone from a profitable position throughout 1987 to a loss position for the first quarter of 1988.” Crestbrook reported total sales of $60.8 million during the first quarter of 1988, up five per cent from the first GAS-FIRED PLANT quarter of 1987, * pulp prices which were fooaecienn offset by the strengthening of the Canadian dollar,” said Hosaka and La: “Pulp prices increased an additional $26 US per metric ton effective April 1, 1988. However, the selling price of lumber in U.S, dollars today ié below that of one year ago due to record-high luinber production in Canada and the United States,” said Hosaka and Lang, “All company facilities operated at capacity during the period, with close attention to all costs, including overhead. Production of lumber was up four per cent and pulp pr emp ag was up seven per cent over the first, quarter of 1987. Hosaka and Lang said the new provi system has cost the company approximately $1.2 million more during the first quarter than the 15 per cent U.S. export tax did last year. quarter of 1988 were $4.8 million, compared to $3.6 million during the first quarter of 1987, “We will continue to strive for some recognition of equity in this stumpage issue,” they said. Hosaka and Lang also told shareholders, “The strengthening of the Canadian dollar has resulted in a decline in pre-tax earnings of $1.4-million for wood products and $1.3-million for pulp. Since most of Crestbrook’s revenue is received in U.S. dollars, foreign have had a signifi impact on the company’s earnings. A change of one cent in the relationship of Canadian to U.S. dollars represents Stumpage, forestry and export charges during the first WKPL wants project KELOWNA (CP) West Kootenay Power and Light has not abandoned plans for a Kelowna plant even though city council has said it will not approve such an oper. ation, a company spokesman said. At a closed meeting this week council voted against giving West. Kootenay per. mission to build a $33-million gas- and oil-fired turbine generator plant, said Mayor Jim Stuart. But Stu McKay, operations, said in a tele phone interview he hopes to have further discussions with city officials. West Kootenay officials asked city officials last week if there was anything they could do to alleviate the city's concerns and if there were any other sites in the city which would be more ap. propriate, Stuart said. West Kootenay’s vice-president of MAZ OTTAWA (CP) — Housing construction will drop by about 18 per cent this year, but the 200,000 units expec- ted to be built will berthe second-highest level of the 1980s, the federal housing agency says. Council is concerned about the environmental impact, in particular on the operation of Kelowna Airport, Stuart said that the operation of the proposed plant could produce condensation worsening chronic weather inversions during the winter months Canada Mortgage and Housing Corp. says slower growth in the economy and in jobs will cause the decline compared with last year's levels. However, favorable mortgage rates and more disposable income for consu- mers will keep starts fairly high. CMHC expects Canadians will have more money to spend as the federal tax re form package moves through its first stage. There were more. starts during 1987 — 245,986 — than at any time since 1976, the agency says in its na- tional housing outlook report for 1988. “Sales of existing units reached a record high of 279,250 and prices jumped sharply by an average of 17.5 per cent.” British Columbia's “ex tremely buoyant market” in 1987 is going to get even better. Homes sales will con tinue high and the rental market remain tight. Strong sales of higher pri. ced homes have driven up the average selling price of a single family home in Van couver by 23 per cent in the last year, the Greater Van couver Real Estate Board said this week. The average price rose to $178,700 from $144,900. CMHC expects housing starts to fall by 20 per cent this year in Ontario to 83,800 “After living among you as a student... I now understand what it means... to be an Canadian.” which sometimes shut down the airport. The B.C: Utilities Commis- sion was scheduled to start a public hearing here April 26 on the company’s application to build and operate a plant, but it was postponed while West Kootenay explored a last-minute offer by B.C. Hy- dro to supply peak power equivalent to the plant's out- put. Housing starts to drop this year units but that is still “well above the average of the last 10 years.” Alberta's housing market will continue to and, although starts in Que- bee are expected to drop sharply, building there will stay above the levels of the last 10 years. New housing construction will be considerably weaker in Manitoba ‘and Saskatche- wan, down. .marginally . in Parince Edward Island and up slightly in Newfoundland. Quebec’s housing starts were at an all-time high last year — 74,179 units — and the province had the coun- try's second-highest rate of increase in resale prices at 15.6 per cent. Sale prices of existing houses in Ontario rose an average 25.6 per cent — the highest rate of increase in the country last year — and vac- ancy rates stood at record lows. The average resale house price in Toronto was $212,822 in March, the Canadian Real Estate Association says. British Columbia's housing starts grew by 39.9 per cent last year and sales of existing houses increased 21.8 per cent. Alberta's recovery from a stump in the oil and gas industry fuelled a 27.5-per- cent increase in housing con struction over 1986. appr $1 million on an after-tax basis. “Demand for both lumber and pulp is anticipated to continue at current levels, however, continued strengthen ing of the Canadian dollar will moderate any price increases,”\added Hosaka and Lang. Forest company announces Larc seed program In an effort to secure more Western Larch seed, Slocan Forest Products Ltd. recently announced the undertaking of operational girdling trials on Tree Farm Licence 3, situated southwest of the Village of Slocan. Paul Dagg, silviculturalist for the company, explained that Western Larch is an _ important commercial tree species in the West Kootenay and likely to increase in importance due to its excellent growth characteristics. “The production of larch seed is quite irregular,” Dagg said in a prepared release, “and we felt it appropriate that we take steps to ensure a more reliable supply. Accordingly we contacted Rod Martin, owner and operator of Rod Martin Tree Improvement of Nakusp to initiate the trials.” Dagg explained that by partially girdling the stem of the tree it is placed under stress and produces an increased cone crop. The girdling does not kill the tree and in fgct the process can be repeated several times. The girdting is done with a hand scribe at the base of the crown, thus dictating that the trees be climbed. “With the direct responsibility for reforestation now being a company cost, it is very important that we consider all means by which we can improve our efficiency,” said Dagg. “A relatively secure and reliable seed supply is one means by which we can achieve that efficiency. “Monitoring of girdling gffectiveness for cone crop production will begin in the summer of 1989. If the treatment is successful, and we are confident it will be, there will be a perpetual supply of Western Larch seed from this area. “Forest nurseries will produce seedlings from this supply and Slocan Forest Products will then plant them on the appropriate sites within our operating area.” Weekly Stocks TORONTO (CP) — Share prices in New York and about whether inflation and interest rates will rise.
