ON THE WATER Vancouver- based Royal Sealink Express says it welcomed its 50,000th - passenger Friday, but is still Getting In And Out Of Trouble Jonathan Green NEWS REPORTER Trying to function in a tight, potentially dangerous space isn’t easy and that is why Ron Mack came to Castlegar this week. Mack is the co-ordinator of the Industrial Training program at Lakeland College in Vermillion, Alta. about two hours south-east of Edmonton. His department is quite diverse, offering 30 safety related courses from proper use of a fire extinguisher to dealing with situations involving hydrogen sulphide gas. He and two instructors were in the Crossroads of the Kootenays this week to give city workers and firemen the lowdown on situations they may encounter on the job. One of them is confined space entry, which is broken down into three levels, two of which were covered here, working in confined space and rescue in confined space. Mack said that, for example, city workers can encounter noxious gases while working in sewers, or that firemen can be overcome by smoke, both working in areas where there isn’t a lot of space to maneuver. To prepare them for that, Mack and his two instructors came to town with a training tank to simulate potential situations, following classroom e. “We address the training needs of the clientele we’re working with,” he said. “The training is based on their needs, not what we say they need.” And because the trainng tank, one of three used, is portable, Mack says the college can take its show on the road. “We'll take the course anywhere someone asks us for,” he said. “We can move into one mode or another depending on who our clients are.” In addition to confined space training, the three Albertans ° also came to instruct on the handling and transportation of dangerous goods and the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System. The program has_ been running at the college for six years, but only in the last year has the training become in- depth. One of only 430 Canadian Registered Safety Professionals in Canada, Mack went to Vermillion a year ago to assume the co-ordinators position. Because a large number of the program’s ‘clients’ are industry related, Mack said members of the department sat down with corporations like Shell and Esso to put together the necessary courses for workplace safety. “Basically, we addressed the needs of industry,” he said. “It’s designed for them by them.” Mack said that instructor Ken Morrow, an 18-year veteran of the oil and gas industry, arrived in Castlegar after teaching in Estevan, Sask. last week and will head to Consort, Alta. to instruct next week. born May 2.
