el a, eat i Union calls for general meeting of CSCU members Scott David Harrison EDITOR Local carpenters are con- tinuing to fight the Castlegar Savings Credit Union. Angry that the CSCU awarded the contract for its new building to a non-union firm, the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America Local 2300 is mak- ing good on its threat to have the credit union’s board of di- rector impeached. Union organizer and CSCU member Gil Arnold says he has_ successfully gathered enough signatures on a petition which could force the local institution to review its current board. The petition requires signatures from five per cent of the CSCU membership. “What this five per cent will do is give us the right to ask (the inspector of B.C. credit unions) for a general meeting,” Arnold said. “This is an attempt to get a rousing response from credit union members and deliver a mes- sage that what they did wasn’t right.” The CSCU fell into disfa- vor with the local carpenters when it awarded the contract to the _ Brilliant-based William Berg-Construction Ltd. The non-union firm had promised to funnel $1 million worth of labor to union work- ers, but that wasn’t good enough for Arnold. Arnold said the CSCU should have never gone non- union, especially when so many of its members are trade unionist. Should the inspector for B.C. credit union grant ap- proval for a general meeting, Arnold said three things would be discussed. “We would discuss the re- moval of the non-union work- er. We’d discuss replacing them with union workers and we'd discuss the removal of the board of directors.” CSCU manager Lorne Myhra said he was unaware of the union’s plans. Myhra said he wasn’t prepared to comment on the affair until a petition had been presented to him. “You've caught me off guard,” he said. “I know there has been a petition go- ing around, but until I actu- ally see it there’s not much that I can say.” Castlegar Christian Academy > Alpha-Omega Curriculum ni Registration: 1992-93 School Year PHONE FOR APPOINTMENT 365-7818 or 365-6506 Registered With B.,C. On strike since July 17, the 180 members of the IBEW says they are set to remind the pub- lic that West Kootenay Power can’t function without them. “We're going to step up our pickets and be- come more visible for the public,” the IBEW’s Mike McCormack said. “We're into our fifth week and we need to remind people that we are out there.” The IBEW did that Thursday, staging a brief rally outside West’s Department Store. The union was concerned because the Castlegar de- partment store was accepting payment of WKP bills. West’s has since stopped accepting pay- ments. “West's management was very co-operative with us and they agreed not to accept any pay- ments while the labor dispute is going on,” Mc- Cormack said. The IBEW has also requested that the In- dustrial Relations Council rule that utility poles be declared off limits to other workers. That would enable the IBEW to set up pickets in front of utility poles, preventing B.C. Tel and Shaw Cable workers from making repairs. The IBEW, which is seeking a better pension plan, will also hold a rally at Waneta Plaza Tuesday to help drum up support for the 37- day-old strike. “The first couple of weeks, the publicity was there but as we go into the fifth week, we are becoming less and less visible. “As long as the lights are on and you can cook your meals and you can watch your tele- vision, people become complacent.” No talks between the IBEW and WKP have been scheduled. Meanwhile, the Office and Technical Work- ers Union and WEP entered a second round of mediation Friday.
