10 THE ROSSLAND MINER, Thurs., July 22nd, 1971 i AS I SEE I}'. WITH HARfl' PEPPER As there was not much to write on in the local sport scene I thought it would be a good time to take my week's vacation, so that's what I did. Quite a few questions were thrown at me in that regard, wanting to know if I had decided to call it a day . So I would like to say here and now that the idea of quitting never entered my head. I got a nice bouquet from the West Kootenay Minor Soccer League for the coverage The Miner has given to their activities during the first half of the season and I want to say that, if, during the layoff period we can come up with a better method of getting the game score sheets to me, as league statistician, we can come up with even better coverage of this popular sport. Another popular sport which suffers from a very short season in Rossland is swimming, and on Sunday evening I had a chat on the phone with Tom Blackwell, who is one of the four young people who manage the operation of the Rossland pool. Also with Mrs . Cy Lambert, whose daughter, Beth, is also one of the youngsters who watch over our youngsters . The other two, incidentally, are Robert Bruce and Mike Rennison . Tom explained to me some of the operational difficulties in running the pool. It appears that the old heater gives some difficulty which makes it necessary to dr-ain off some of the water and replace it with city water, a new heather would correct most of the present troubles, Tom says, and hopes that it may soon become a reality. Mrs. Lambert told of an upcoming adult swimming class to be held daily from 12 noon to I P .M . Instruction will be from 12 - 12:30 and the extra half-hour can be used for practice. The cost will be $4.00 and baby-sitting will be available at the pool for mothers J up. Bill Profili and Simister coached . ID New Denver on Sunday, kids lost 6-4. Dave Lloyd all the way in this one and the loss . The local boys a 4-1 lead in the first lllliDc but New Denver whitUed away at the lead an,d finally onrcame it, while their pitcher tightened up and stopped Rossland cold. Bob Lloyd and " Sonny'' Samuelson looked after transportation and coaching for this trip. I would like to offer my con gratulations to a former bonspiel curling partner, Dick Ne cker, for the winning by his 13 year olds of the B.C. Babe Ruth Championship in that category . Dick has some fine youngsters on his team . Steve Tam bellini and Allan Pastro each won two games for the unde feated West Kootenay All -Stars and Brian LeRose and Robert Volpatti were easily the hitting stars . taking the class . Family season tickets will coverthepractice portion of the hour class . Rossland's Little League All-stars have played two games since being formed, and bave yet to find a winning formula. In a game played in Rossland on Wednesday eve ning of last week .they lost to the Beaver Valley All-Stars, who are coached by Bernie McMahon. Bernie has coached Little Leaguers for many years ID the Valley, and figures that this year's edition is his best ever. Bernie tells me he has lligh hopes of taking his young sters all the way to a B.C. title this season. He says, "Let me just get by Andy Bileski's Trail kids, and I'll have a cbance." Bernie is also a part time sports writer, for the Beaver Valley paper. The kids from the Valley beat our kids 1-0, behind some fine pitching ., Tin) McMahon, Bernie's son. ;..
