Fifth scientist dies stran LONDON (AP( — On March 30, scientist David Sands climbed into, his car, the trunk packed with tanks of gasoline, and drove into the front of a vacant restaur- ant. He died in a fireball that incinerated him almost be- yond recognition, the fifth British scientist involved in security-related research to die in mystérious circum- stances since August. A sixth scientist has been missing since _January._To- gether the cases add up either to a series of bizarre coincidences or to a cloak- and-dagger conspiracy. All the deaths look like suicides, but only two have been so ruled officially. In no case has a convincing motive for suicide been made known, but the government insists there is no need -for a special inquiry. Three of the scientists worked for Marconi, an elec- tronics subsidiary of indus- trial giant General Electric Co., a leading defence con- tractor, which is not related to General Electric in North America. The Financial Times said they, along with the missing man, all were “concerned with advanced computer soft- ware and signal processing — a fast-moving scientific area U.S. drops WASHINGTON (AP) The divorce rate in the United States is at its lowest in more than a decade, the government says. After rising in the 1960s and 1970s, the divorce rate fell to 4.8 per 1,000 people last year — the lowest since 1975, says the National Cen- tre for Health Statistics. The reason for the drop is probably a combination of older first-time brides and grooms and a change in social attitudes toward maintaining marriages, said Jeanne Moor- man of the Census Bureau. “There seems to have been a period when divorce was the easiest answer. Now there is more of a feeling that people should try harder, should work more at it. Marriage is important . . . and we should not be giving up so easily.” Moorman and Arthur Nor- ton of the Bureau's popu. lation division have written a study called Marriage and Divorce Patterns of U.S. Women. It is published in the February edition of the Journal of Marriage and Family. In addition to the change in attitudes, Moorman said in a telephone interview, “mar riages that occur later seem to be more stable marriages . and the consequence is the stabilizing of divorce rates.” But the new findings don't Children affected WINNIPEG (CP) — Child ren are the overlooked victims of spousal abuse, say two members of the Domes: tic Abuse Project, a Minneap- olis-based organization that counsels families in violent domestic settings. Just because children aren't beaten doesn't mean they aren't influenced by disputes in the home, Jim Brink told a recent wife abuse seminar in Winnipeg. “They're always affected,” he said. “It's kind of an extension of the whole idea that kids are property.” Adults often try to shield children from wife abuse, believing talking about it will cause more trauma they're already living in a violent setting, Brink said they should be helped to work through the supportive Because issues in a environment vitally important both in the military arena and™in-com- mercial applications.” COMMITS SUICIDE? The first death was re- ported on Aug. 5 when Vimal Dajibhai, 24, was found in a gorge below Clifton bridge near Bristol, Marconi officials say he worked for Marconi Underwater Systems at Wat- ford, near London, as a junior software engineer checking torpedo guidancé systems. On Oct. 28 Ashhad Sharif, a computer systems analyst working for another Marconi unit near London, was found strangled in a park near Bristol. The inquest found he had tied a rope to a tree, looped the other end around his neck, and drove off in a car at high speed. Sharif, 26, had worked for the same company as Daji- bhai in early 1986, but at a different factory and not on underwater research, says Marconi Ik Abel gely ough. He vanished two days before his wedding anniver- sary and had already bought his wife a gift. Britain, whose nuclear ar- senal is submarine-based, is a world leader in undersea warfare technology. On Feb. 22 Peter Peapell, 46, a lecturer at the Royal Military College of Science at Shrivenham near Swindon, died lying under his car with the engine running and garage doors shut. The Defence Ministry says. Peapell was working on a Haddon. On Jan. 8 Avtar Singh Gida, 26, vanished. A 1985 survey found that nearly one-third of women aged 35 to 39 had ended a first marriage in divorce. Norton and Moorman found that divorce is most likely for women who first marry while still in their teens and for those who give birth within seven months after being married. Divorce is also higher among women with incomplete educations. Past studies have found that 95 per cent of women eventually marry. The median age at first marriage for women rose to 23.3 years in 1985 from 21.1 years in 1975. Most women who divorce eventually remarry, Norton and Moorman found, but “the proportion remarrying ap- pears to be declining.” Their study also concluded that women who wait until they are 30 or older to wed tend to have more stable marriages. Aryan Nations to ban HAYDEN LAKE, Idaho (AP) — The news media won't be allowed to attend the Aryan Nations’ seventh summer meeting because last year’s event was reduced to “a circus atmosphere,” says white supremacist leader Richard Butler. Plans for the Aryan Na tions Congress July 11-12 are proceeding, Butler said, even though federal criminal in dictments could be handed down before then against white supremacists. Butler said this year's conference on the grounds of his Church of Jesus Christ Christian, Aryan Nations, north of Hayden Lake would continue even if he is behind bars. “Absolutely, it would go on,” the 69-year-old Aryan leader said. Butler's Aryan newsletter says this year's congress “will be a closed two-day session with no outside media in attendance.” Featured speakers will be available for pictures and questions at a news confer ence on the evening of July 10, Butler said. media “We assume there will be federal and (Jewish) agents in attendance, so conduct yourself accordingly,” his newsletter says. “We don’t want the cam- eras around like we had last year,” Butler said. “Part of the reason for this is because of the sometimes-inane ac- tions of our guests. “We had a bunch of flakes here last year, wearing weird Klan uniforms, posing for pictures,” Butler said. “We don't blame the media for making hay out of that kind of situation.” “Those sort of pictures give the public a false perception of the white supremacy movement," Butler explained. Invited guest speakers for this year's congress intlude Robert Miles of the Mountain Church in Cohoctah, Mich. William Pierce of the Nation al Alliance; Thom Robb, national chaplain of the Ku Klux Klan; and Tom Metzger of the White Aryan Resis tance. All are reported to be likely targets of a grand jury sedition probe in Arkansas. SOLIGO, KOIDE & JOHN CHARTERED ACCOUNTANTS 615 Columbia Ave. (Upstairs) Castlegar Phone 365-7745 Henry John, B.Sc.
