My doctor says that there is no such classification. Do you agree with this? — Mra. J.W.N., N.J. Dear Mrs. N.: T agree with your doctor, surgeons who are specificall classed as “‘cancer surgeons," The routine In such cases is to have a complete neurological examination, all including the EEG, or brain cer , tient to specializes in that particular area of the body. eee There is no medical that Is designated as a “cancer specialist" or a “cancer surgeon.” All physicians, when they examine patients, accumulate as much information as they can before coming to a con- clusion or diagnosis. Similarly, all surgeons in all ties operate on cancers in their own field. For example, a ‘general surgeon” will operate on a cancer of the stomach or the intestine, He will also remove all bladders and appendices My son is &-y Id and for the past three years has had selzures similar to those of an epileptic. It was suggested that the problem was due to low blood sugar, so a high protein diet was prescribed. Now, they say that an en- cephalogram study should be done, but it will be a month before we can have an ap- polntment. Do you know a hospital where they specfalize in such illnesses? — Mrs. P.M., Mass. Dear Mrs, M.: ‘ It is difficult to believe that the lect: and do all other within the limit of his alty, There are some specialists who devote inernelyee to unique types of operations. But there are no studies have not been suggested during the three years that your son has had convulsions, I am truly con- fused by your statement that there was an attempt to treat these convulsive seizures with a high protein diet. wave, test. There are also a variety of other tests that can definitively establish the diagnosis. When once this is made, one of the many drugs that are now available to control such seizures can be prescribed. Int the majority of acci- dents a motor vehicle simply collides with a deer. The remaining collisions are more complex and usually more serious — the vehicle over- turns; the vehicle goes on to hit some fixed object such as a telephone pole, culvert or bridge; the deer comes through the windshield; an- other vehicle becomes | in- volved, More collisions occur on unlighted roadways after dark. Few occur at dawn and dusk, the times when we tend to think that deer are most active. The majority of car-deer strikes occur.when roads are clear and dry. Be alert to the posted deer warning signs. A reader writes: Dear Herb: I'm confused about this steel shot-lead ‘shot business. It isn't a ‘problem where I hunt, but I ‘ean see it coming. What are the differences in the two ‘kinds? — Wondering about Steel Dear Wondering: I'm with you. This is a highly confusing subject. And as you point out, the use of steel shot instead of lead will continue to grow until lead is Simost forgotten, “~. The first thing to under- stand is that the steel shot on the market today is far differ- ent from that made several years ago when the first lead shot ban appeared. They've improved both the shot and the shells so there isn't the terrible barrel damage to récent model guns that there ‘was at first. Older guns-and especially some of the fine ‘doubles still can't handle ‘steel. ... To see how steel shot performs in the field, we need to take a look at some technical tests, then trans- late them into hitting birds. 1, One of the most impor- tant technical bits is that a load of steel shot weighing an ounce and an eighth leaves -your barrel at a speed well over 100 feet per second faster than the speed of a standard lead load of about ‘the same volume, or an ounce-and-a-half. (I won't try to convert these figures to ~ Winning metric. They were done with ounces, feet, etc.) This velocity evens out at about 40 yards, so within that range, which is the range at which most birds are shot, the stee] has a higher velocity. Along with this greater velocity is our second tech- nical fact, that the steel has a tighter pattern. The steel will put 10 per cent more pellets in a 30-inch circle at 40 yards than will the lead, and the tighter pattern continues on past 40 yards. From the practical view- point this means that with steel you have to change your habits of how far to lead birds. Since the steel is travelling faster, your old | habits would tend to send your shot string in front of a bird in ranges under ‘40 yards. But since the speed of the steel drops off compared to lead beyond 40 yards, your old habits would make your shot tend to fall behind the bird, The tighter pattern means either you have to shoot better or shift your choke to more wide open from what you've used. One final bit of practical advice is that hunters get better results with steel if they go toa larger size. Thus, if you liked to shoot size 6 in lead, go to size 4 in steel. These are some of the practical applications. I hope they help.
