a16 Aquanuats NEWS STAFF Although not a_ baseball Aquanaut peting, the Aquanauts w to the Trail-Warfield Stingrays meet over the weekend and swam away with their second win in four meets, 162 points better than runner-up Nelson. Head coach Tom Carew said he was impressed with his team’s performance. “The (number) of the kids we brought compared to that of Nelson, Trail and Colville,” he said. “I think that says a lot about the depth of our club.” Over in Robson, the River Otters’ came away from the meet with a sixth-place finish. Coach Tara Paulhus said she was happy with the placing, es- blaze Trail pecially with only 22 swimmers competing. “We accumulated a lot of points for the number of kids we had there,” she said. Paulhus said the Otters are beginning to gel as a unit, which bodes well for this week- end’s meet in Colville. “They're really coming to- gether as a team,” she said. “If they do as well as they did in Trail, we should be up there in the points.” . Carew said about 50 Aqua- nauts will travel to Colville, where he expects the hosts to enter some 100 swimmers. With that in mind, he thinks his club will be in tough to put back-to-back wins together. “You can never count us out,” he said. “We'll be in the run- ning, but it will be a lot closer.” GYM DANDY WEDDING @ Wednesday, July 8, 1992 Fastball regular season winding down as strangely as it started @ Local men’s fastball league getting harder to predict with every game NEWS STAFF The regular season is com- ing to a close in Castlegar Commercial Men’s Fastball action, but that doesn’t mean things are starting to make any more sense. Results of Tuesday’s action between Big O and Nelson and Banjo’s and the Mer- chants were unavailable at press time. HEADING FOR HOME night. Pensioners return to weekly golf routine WI Local course hosts 43 pensioners in first post- Dinosaur meet Thursday Bud Lowther NEWS COLUMNIST Now that the Dinosaurs have gone again — back 50 mil- lion years or so — the Castlegar Pensioners returned to their regular Thursday morning play of the back nine on July 2. There were 43 golfers with one visitor, Wally Davies of Vancouver, and one newcomer, Al Lorimer, and both were giv- en golf balls. The local course, which is now lush and beautiful due to the efforts of Nick Sherstobitoff and his crew, gets harder to play all the time. Nick says it’s our Augusta National of the north. The best low gross scores were by Bill Cheveldave and myself, both with 44. I got my first golf ball of the year. Balls for low net scores went to Lawrence Paul, Wally Brunn, Frank Steenvoorden, Kane Gjennestad, Jack Dunn and Arnie Akselson. As mentioned before, we are lucky to have such a beautiful and challenging golf course, so let’s keep it that way by replac- ing our divots. Tomorrow at 8 a.m., the game will be for least putts and will be looked after by Joe Cushner, D. MacDonald and Frank Webster. TIP OF THE WEEK Try not to stand too close to the ball, especially after you hit it. Sum- mer Games get underway this week. A total of 81 local athletes have been named to represent the region in Port Alberni for the annual event, which gets underway tomorrow and ‘ends Sunday. And of those 81, 69 will ei- ther participate as athletes, coaches, officials, chaperones or managers. One of those making the trip will be Ann Clow, acting as a chaperone for the women’s field hockey team. Clow said she likes the team’s chances, using famil- iarity with one another as a reason. “The majority of them are Stanley Humphries girls and they did quite well,” she said. “T think we'll have a very good showing.” Almost the entire team will me made up of SH girls, as no less than 10 played for the lo- cal high school during the past year. Clow said the youth of the squad will work as both an ad- vantage and a disadvantage, adding the speed will be there, but not the provincial experi- ence. “Young girls are a lot faster, but the older ones tend to use their experience,” she said. To overcome that, Clow said the team should just sit back and realize just what they can accomplish. “I think as long as they know they’re playing up to their potential, I think they'll do alright,” she said. The team will also consist of 16 in swimming, 15 in boys’ softball, 15 in mens’ field hock- ey, 10 in basketball, eight in volleyball, four in golf and one each in baseball and track and field.
