Castlegar coach Garr Sauer is not looking bac at the last four games, only | ahead to their next match against the Maple Leafs ~-“Home-ice is in. our favor j and that’s what we worked hard for all year, now it's a “best-of three arid anything can ff happen.” To earn their win on Friday, in Nelson, the Rebels needed three third period goals to come~ That game plan ’ the Leafs who ‘checked and basically took it to Rockettes nip Wolves, O JOHN VAN PUTTEN Sun Sports A local ladies basketball team is moving onward and upward to bigger, better and more competitive action The Stanley phries Senior have earned them- selves a place among the best Single A girls basketball teams in the Province of British Columbia. To qualify and represent their zone, the SHSS Senior Girls beat the Grand Forks Wolves 71-44 on their home turf, Saturday afternoon. “J like it,” SHSS Senior Girls Coach Jack Closkey said fol- lowing the teams win on their home court. “Winning isn't so bad,” he added, smiling. At the half-time break, only five points separated the two teams with the Rockettes out in front 30-25. Hitting the hardwood for the second half, both teams tried to open a lead but things stayed close through to the end of the third quarter when the Rockettes could only manage a 46- 40 lead. Even into the third quarter, the teams were evenly matched with both running basically the same style and tempo of game. The only difference was the Rockettes were taking their shots from outside the key while the Wolves relied on their accurate passing and inside shooting game- Throughout the game, the Rockettes were having trouble penetrating the Grand Forks defence to execute their usually strong inside offense. It was still anyones game until the end of the third quarter when the Rockettes turned up the steam and really started, applying pressure on the Wolves. According to Closkey, it was that late third quarter pressure that turned the much-needed momentum in favor of the Rockettes for the remainder of the ame. ® “We really did not get into the flow of the game until the end of the third quarter,” Closkey said. From the Wolves bench, Coach John Flack highlighted the same late third quarter switch in tempo which carried over into the final frame as a turning point for his squad. “We just died in the last quarter,” Grand Forks Coach, John Flack said following the loss to the Rockettes. “We just ran out of steam.” During the final frame the Rockettes outscored the Wolves 25-4 en route to the 71-44 win According to Flack the biggest factor holding his squad from winning the game was a lack of substitute players “I just didn’t have that luxury,” he said, pointing towards the players, in comparison to SHSS “There's safety in numbers,” Closkey said “I am proud of the team. We should have a good team next year I will have all my players back,” said Flack following the loss with a ‘I’ll-be-back-next year’ look in his eye, The B.C Single A Girls Provincial play-offs are being held in Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island at Qualicum Sec- ondary starting on March 9.
