Rebel Hockey As we are in the middle of our winter activities, it is hard to believe that the regular junior hockey schedule is near- ing completion. With a little « less than a month to go in the regular schedule the Rebels are in the thick of things for a top playoff spot. Saturday night the Rebels see action with the Nelson Junior Maple Leafs. As we are coming down the home stretch, the club could certainly use your support. Terry Halisheff got the second at 9:12 assisted by Bruce Martin and Nelson's Brad Carlson scored their only goal of the period. But all the goals in the second period went to Nelson, Graeme Douglas scored at 5:03 unassisted, then 20 seconds later it was Mare Centrone from Harold Schamhart and Douglas. The score remained Nelson 3, Castlegar 2 until 15:51 of the third period. Nelson's Terry Maglio had just picked up a. two-minute penalty for cross checking, when someone on the Castlegar team noticed a Nel- son player without a mouth guard. If the Maple Leafs continue to improve, they will make the playoffs and Rossland will be out. i The Rebels had a tough weekend tour of the East Division with a game Saturday against the third-place Kim- berley Knights. This was a rough game. The Rebels lost. In doing so they sustained an ankle injury to Greg Moroso, and a shoulder injury to John Josafatow. John Makaroff, Tim Paul and Midget call-up Kevin Kirby joined the club for the Sunday afternoon game against the first-place Cranbrook Colts, which the Rebels, “with a little help from Bruno Tassone” — 3 goals and 2 assists — were able to win by an 8 to & score, Darwin Mott has asked for and received his release from tive Jan. 16 also. Coach Jim Higgins said, “They complement each other iwell.. Rob is more of an ‘offensive minded defenseman cwhile Terry is more of a ‘defensive player.” + The two players concur. Seaman said, “Ideally, we're a good duo. Rob has played forward in the past and can ‘move the puck. I'm more of a ‘conservative player, I have to give the puck up to somebody else. I have to make up in aggressiveness for what I lack jn finesse. It is good to have Shersty' back there with me; I van trust him.” Sherstobitoff, who is called ‘Shersty” for obvious reasons, ‘added, "I really enjoy playing ‘with Terry. But there was a jinx at the beginning of the year. It seems the games we ‘Started we lost and when we didn’t we won.” : Sherstobitoff is from Blue- berry Creek, British Columbia, in the far western part of Canada. His hometown is a seven-and-one-half-hour auto- ‘mobile drive from the area's Major city, Vancouver. If he ‘hadn't attended Princeton, he would have enrolled at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver. 1 For Princeton’ s Tigers good shot from the left point. He has good puck control and is a good passer who sces things The electri and computer science major was initially recruited by for- mer Princeton coach Jack Sem- ler, who was a good friend of Rob's Rossland Junior “B" coach Lloyd MacLellan. He liked the academic reputation and what the hockey program offered. However, Princeton's re- putation does not exactly pre- cede the mention of the name out in B.C. When Rob tells people he goes to college in Princeton, many people look at him strangely and say, “There’s no university in Princeton,” That's because there is a town named Princeton in B.C., too. Shersty has been a key performer on the Tiger power play the past two seasons, topping the team in PP goals with four in 1978 while leading with two so far this year. Higgins said, “Shersty has a ping out on the ice.” He played at his best recently in the RPI Invitational, as he was named to the All-Tourney First Team, along with teammate Craig Tresham. Sherstobitoff admits the - Tigers are having trouble get- ting some wins this season. “We've just got to keep going and stick with it, It's just a matter of time. We've got a young team with many good recruits and the victories will come.” Rob is one of several skaters who also plays on the iger golf team. Last spring, his “sixth-man” score was the deciding margin in the dual meet victory over Eastern champ Army. He'd like to play golf again this spring but is concerned about the additional time lost from his studies. He is also considering trying out for the baseball team as a pitcher.
