CASTLEGAR NEWS, Thursday, July 14, 1977 ‘Caterpillars Ravaging Kootenay Fruit Trees Many apple and other . ‘types of deciduous trees in the Kootenay region have suffered damage by the feeding of an insect called the apple and thorn skeletonizer, Symptoms of injury are an upward rolling of the leaves and a brown, burnt appearance, Closer in- spection will reveal that the leaf has been eaten away leaving only the veins. The trees most commonly attacked are apples but flower- ing crabs, crabapples, ash, birch, pear, cherry and thorn also act as hosts, ‘The insect has four stages in, its life cycle with the damaging stage being the lar- vae or caterpillar stage. The larvae are about one-half of an Take Your Head Out of the Sand The world’s largest bird, the ostrich, may stand eight feet tall and weigh as much as + 800 pounds, The’ ostrich is flightless, : but can move across the plains j.at approximately 30 miles per + hour. ; As many as 50 ostriches may band together and follow’ : herds of grazing beasts, de- * vouring insects and small ani- mals stirred up by the passing : throngs. Unfortunately, the pest has three or four generations per year which means that three or ‘four attacks by the larvae can be expected. Controls of Imidan, Sevin, or Diazinon at label rates should be directed against the larvae when they are again, It can only be speculation over the future of trees already damaged by the’ skeletonizer but trees in good health prior to attack will probably recover whereas weaker trees may not. Another pest that is ex- pected to create damage this year is the pear slug. The in- jury is similar to that of the skeletonizer. The slugs are riot quite half an inch long and are olive-green in color. Spray when seen with the same materials listed for skeleton- izers. NE OF TH!
