Pulpit & Pew By Pastor Tom Mulder Evangelical Free Church UNCONDITIONAL LOVE “How can God give me something good when I don’t deserve it?” The young man was doubting the most basic idea of Christianity: grace. Grace means that God gives us a wonderful new life — a new beginning, in spite of our great failures. He loves us even when we have turned our backs on him. After probing a little deep- er into the man’s background a pattern arose. His parents had shown love only when he had performed according to their standards. He grew up feeling that he only deserved love if he had earned it. We call this kind of love conditional. Conditional love says, “I will love you if you have done something which pleases me.” God's love is unconditional. Unconditional love says, “I love you and that means al. ways, no matter what.” It gives and expects nothing in return. It is not like the love we see in our society today. So many married people today seem to promise to stay together as long as love lasts. Uncon: ional love promises to always be there no matter how hard things get. And that’s what God's love promises. Parents: teach your child by example God uncondition al love. Don't just say, “I love you” when your child has achieved some great task. Don't hold your “I love KEEP YOUR get every deduction, exemy and credit you're entitled to. Call your near- est H&R Block office today. We could help you keep more of your hard-earned money. 1444 Columbia Ave., Castlegar 365-6151 9 to 6 Mon.-Fri. 9 to 5 Sat. you's” for rewards for good behavior. Say, “I love you" out of the blue; for no reason at all. Buy your child some little gift when there is no special occasion. But don't make it a guilt offering. We often can try to show love when we feel guilty for what we have or have not done. This is con. ditional love too. We may feel that we have not spent enough time with our child and usé gifts substitute for love, or to soothe our guilty conscience. Children can push them selves hard for the little bit of praise a parent may give. Some parents feel that it is good for a child to push. But when have they pushed enough? When will they finally have earned love? This pushing on a child's part is usually a sign of low self. esteem. The child hates him- self. I have seen dramatic changes occur in people's lives when they felt someone loved them even when they didn’t deserve it. The violent gang member turned into a caring person. But even a parent's love can't accomp lish this. We need God's love in our lives. Each one of us first has to know that we are loved unconditionally before we can show unconditional love. We can know this through our Bibles. “But God demon. strates his own love for us in this: While we were still sin ners, Christ died for us.’ Only God could have died for those who did not love him, this is real unconditional love. Do you believe it? Practice it. FOR $17.00 PER SQ. FT. YOU CAN BUY A PRE-MANUFACTURED PACKA: TO BUILD THIS 1.290 SQ. FT. TO LOCK-UP STAGE!
