The Castlegar_contingent— of 17 athletes joined a team of 104 seniors representing the West Kootenay at the games which are for people age 5S and over. The only gold medal of the games was picked up by horseshoe pitcher Stan Langille who won in the men’s D event Betty Langille made it two medals for pitchers as she won silver in the women's D event. The Langilles, of Genelie, are both rookie pitchers for the West Kootenay Horseshoe Club in Castlegar. Another member of the club, Earl Rourke, participated but did not place in the top three in his events. Verma Keraiff, Bill Keraiff, Dorothy Raymond and John Moran were members of the team that made it to the finals in slo-pitch at the games, but had to settle for silver af- ter losing to a Kelowna team. Castlegar took three medals in the pool led by the husband and wife combination of Marg and Bill Van Yzerloo who won silver and bronze respectively in the 25-metre breast- stroke event: Nancy Yolland won Castlegar's other swimming medal with a bronze in the 50-metre freestyle. Jack Yolland matched his wife's win with a bronze medal in men’s singles tennis. In golf, Otto Walker was a few strokes away from gold coming home with silver in the men’s event. In women’s golf, Marie Makaroff took the bronze. Both Walker and Makaroff are members of the Castlegar Golf Club. Also participating from this area were John Raymond in the 10- kilometre race walk, Katherine Hominiuk in golf, Herman and Tilley Kemperman in tennis and Margaret and Michael Ford in contract bridge.
