Page 12B The Castlegar Sun Wednesday, September 22, 1993 Ann Landers Syndicated Columnist Dear Ann Landers: You struck a nerve with that letter from the woman whose apartment manager unlocked the door to let her father in. You made the point that the man could have been a rapist. Well, Ann, did it occur to you that a bona fide father might not be welcome, either? 1 am the only child of a tyrannical, religious fanatic father and a kind but equally zealous mother. As a child, I was never permitted to go anywhere unescorted, not even to and from school. I was not allowed to date. I was ordered not to close my bed- room door or lock the bathroom door. My mail was opened. Every phone call was monitored. My room and book bag were searched daily. I felt like an inmate, even though I was an excellent student and had never {been in uouble. There was absolutely no basis for this distrust Hl I won a scholarship and escaped to an out-of-town university, witere I enjoyed privacy and a normal social life. After graduation, I found a good job and moved intq my own apart- ment. One day, my father heard that my fiance had moved in with me. He got into his car, announcing that he planned “to get that girl out of her sinful apartment, drag her home and beat some sense into her.” He was soon af my door, scream- ing and quoting Scripture. I refused to let him in, When it became quiet, I thought he had gone. Imagine my horror when the apartment manager unlocked the door for a raving man brandishing a Bible and a leather strap. My fiance (now my husband) threw him out bodily but not before he wrecked the apartment, Parental authority ends at age 18 No one, including parents, has the right to gain admission to someone else's residence. If they don't have a key, there may be a very good rea- son.— Free At Last in Baton Rouge Dear Baton Rouge: The apartment manager had no right to unlock your door and let your father in. These days, interlopers don’t carry leather straps and Bibles. They carry guns. I hope ail landlords will pay spe- cial aftention to your letter.
