B6 CASTLEGAR NEWS, Septombor 12, 1979 Young B.C. drinkers begin before reaching legal age Most young B.C. drink- ers were consuming alcohol long before they were legally allowed to do so, Consumer and Corporate affairs Min- ister James Neilson said recently. Nielsen, who is respon- tlle for liquor control, licen- sing and distribution, said that recent studies show that drinkers in their late teens na early 20s had their fea taste of alcohol when they were only 14. The foajority of drinkers started imbibing at age 16. * Problem drinkers — whom Nielsen described as people who consume alcohol to excess at least 10 per cent of the time — started drink- ing at an even earlier age, 13. Nielsen pointed out that these 18, 14 and 16-year-olds are not being served in liquor stores or in licensed prem- ises. He said they are obtain- ing alcohol from their homes or from older friends and acquaintances, Few people questioned said they supply liquor to their children for parties. However, one in three of the problem drinkers admit they supply alcohol to their under- age children. And minors who are close enough to the legal drinking age to pass as adults are causing problems in licensed establishments, said Nielsen. Last year, charges against minors who purchas- ed liquor or consumed it in licensed premises were up 52 per cent, to an all-time high of 4,008. Turning to the popu- lation as a whole, Nielsen said that almost 90 per cent of the adults in British Columbia drink. He said that the vast majority consumes liquor moderately and in- frequently. But approximat- ely ‘11 percent of B.C. drinkers are in the “problem” category, and cause social problems that affect every- une in the province. On other alcohol-related topics, the minister said that, research shows: The majority of people favour the concept. of neigh- borhood pubs, but few want them in their own neighbor- hoods, saying pubs are too noisy and there are already enough drinking places. Only four per cent are eritical about the govern- ment monopoly on liquor National Museums of Canada The National Museums of Canada's National Inven- tory Program, a network of 82 computer terminal instal- lations across Canada, con- tains information on over one million artifacts and works of art in Canadian public mu- seums and galleries, In the last year, the number of museums parti- cipating in the system grew from 69 to 152. The regis- tering of museum collections on computer is part of the sales; but a majority of people favor the concept of private, outlets selling beer and wine.
