peutic drugs have waned in
popularity. But Doug Geekie,
director of public affairs for
the Canadian Medical Asso-
ciation, “noted there is in-
creasing evidence that many
of the mood-altering medi-
cations can become addictive.

Geekie, in a telephone in-

terview from Ottawa, pre- *

dicted: “The volume of (pres-
eribed). mood-modifying
drugs and minor. tranquili-
zers in particular will con-
tinue to decline.”

Everson noted such medi-
cation still ranks third in the
list. of most popularly-pre-
scribed drugs in the United
States.

of murdering four babies: at

observation and treatment
Tuesday in the intensive-
care unit of Belleville General
Hospital.

Dr. James. Nelles, 59, was
admitted during’ the week-
end, said. Iona, McInroy, dir-
ector of nursing atthe hospi-
tal. She declined'to comment

! on a report he had suffered a
heart attack.

Mclnroy said * ‘Nelles, head
of pediatrics at the hospital, -
was under, observation and
being treated. The fact he is
in{ the*‘intensive-care unit
“shows how serious his condi-
tion is,” she said.

Nelles’s daughter, Susan,
25, was discharged in May
following a preliminary hear-
ing into four counts of first-
degree murder. She was
charged in March, 1981,.in
connection with the deaths of

four babies at the Hospital -
