The denizens of those cheap seats are called Bleacher Bums, also the name of a long-running play of the 19708 ‘ism and cated, plans to do his annual game broadcast from there later this summer “when it warms up.” BEER SHOWER Like Caray, the Bums have 4 reputation for downing a few beers, which has led to rowdiness. On May 19 this year, a game between the Cubs and the Reds was halted for six minutes when fans showered about the gambling, drinking, sun tanning, other antics that go on beyond the ivy-covered outfield wall by Chieago Cub fans. No other major-league bleachers are like these — ina stadium still without lights and smack in the middle of a teeming urban neighborhood. Lithless Wrigley Field means afternoon baseball, and the 3,260 uncovered bleacher seats mean lots of sunshine for hundreds of shirtless young men and ci d y Jones with beer cups. Dawson used to get that Rind of hostile treatment from the Wrigley bleacher fans when he was an outfielder for the Montreal Expos, but now that he’s a slugging and fielding star with the Cubs, he regularly receives a standing ovation when he takes right field. “Knowing they're behind you makes it that much more enjoyable to go out,” “says Dawson, who adds “Montreal fans are more subdued.” scantily clad young women, many of whom clutch cups of cold beer. " GREATEST BUY “An afternoon in the bleachers is the greatest buy in the country,” Veeck, who sat out there many afternoons after selling his Chicago White Sox ownership in 1981, ‘was quoted as saying before he died at the age of 71 last year. ‘ “Drinking a few beers and telling a few lies . .. you can't beat the entertainment,” he said. The Bums include businessmen carrying briefcases and others who have escaped work or school. “The greatest fans are in the bleachers,” says Cubs announcer Harry Caray. “That's where I always sat when I was a kid growing up in St. Louis.” Caray, whose love for the bleacherites is recipro- During this Silver Anniversary year of the bleachers, the Cubs have a slot at the division crown, and, of course, there are those die-hard Cub fans who dream of the club capturing its first World Series championship since 1908. “T’'m sure they're going to win the pennant and beat Kansas City in the World Series,” predicts Ronnie (Woo Woo) Wickers, the most vocal of the bleacherites. Wickers, a 45-year-old free-spirit whose owl-like chant “Cubs, Woo, Cubs, Woo” echoed around Wrigley Field on game days for the last 17 years, was feared dead when he missed the first 21 Cub home games this year. “T'm alive and the Cubs are alive,” Wickers insisted when he was finally loeated working at a pizza parlor. His boss agreed to adjust Wickers schedule so he could attend games. JACQUES DEMERS Wanted by Red Wings DETROIT (CP) — Jacques Demers is saying little about a series of telephone calls which indicate Detroit talked with him about coaching the Red Wings while he was under contract to the St. Louis Blues. “I know that I didn’t make them,” Demers said, “I did what I had to do. “I have a family. I have to protect myself. That's all I can say. I can’t say anymore.” The Red Wings and Blues reached an out-of-court set- tlement and NHL president John Ziegler ordered the Blues and Red Wings not to discuss the issue publicly.
