For years, the record of John’s ad- ventures as a teacher-missionary in Quito, Equador, appeared in this col- umn. Then, after 30-years, he had a to- tal breakdown and returned to stay in Victoria, leaving his beloved and flour- ishing ‘Dios-paj Nan’ (God’s Way’) or- phanage-shelter behind him. He had started it with two boys in a single room and built it to a well established home-complex for almost 50 children. A life-long bachelor, he had a ‘fam- ily of hundreds’, a patriotic Canadian, he became a citizen of Equador, a died- in-the-twéed Victorian he became com- pletely identified with the culture of his adopted land so that Victoria is now the foreign city to him. Thus, a very sensitive, dedicated and devout man, is not only racked by illness but is suffering from reverse culture shock and recovery is slow. When I received his letter last week I phoned him and for over an hour at- tempted to encourage him on behalf of all his friends and pupils here to car- ry on and follow his heart. For all of his friends, here slightly edited, is John’s latest letter. Dear Jack: The mail has just arrived, of the Tr a4 Reflections and Recollections a) John CHARTERS sundry cards and letters that came to- day, yours was the last to be opened and read and will be the first to be an- swered. Every time I have ‘phoned you there has been no one home, so I as- sumed you were either too busy as usual or on another journey. In a sense I was right on both counts. Despite the long silence on my part, I continue to pray for you and Bunny and all your family every single day. How I appreciate the description of you present illness as a “long, difficult journey to a strange land.” My friend, Elizabeth Elliot, of earlier Ecuador days and now a prolific writer and pro- ficient speaker, observed in one of her books on pain, sorrow and suffering, that “no suffering is for nothing”, and from somewhere and someone else — was it you? — the illustration of the sil- versmith or goldsmith allowing the molten metal to reach the exact tem- perature to rid itself of unwanted im- purities, and then proving to his own satisfaction that the process was com- plete by seeing his own face reflected as he stooped over the boiling mass. Well, to all of this there is more than an element of truth. The Apostle Paul said it all more concisely in Hebrews 12:6. . . the Lord disciplines those He loves. The more severe is that so-called “discipline” for only the choicest of dia- monds merit ruthless cutting and the specialist’s long and arduous atten- tion. How's that for a package of h and ser izing. But it comes from a somewhat addled yet ap- preciative head and heart. Before I sign off: . .. While I’m still far from 100 per cent physically or emotionally, I do look forward to flying to Ecuador in January, accompanied by my sister-Barbara. We're to leave Victoria on Jan. 22, arriving in Quito on the eve of my Jan. 24 birthday, and returning on March 20. I hope to look for suitable accommodation and to check on the requirements of a semi- retirement-type visa, and should my heart and general physical condition A chance to remember our friend John Munday adapt to Quito’s 9,300-foot altitude, re- turn at a later date for an indefinite pe- riod. All this, of course, is on the as- sumption that I can be useful there, that my somewhat ‘stoned out’ emo- tional state returns completely to nor- ma. (?!)and that’s highest glory and for the benefit of so many, many people who so desperately need him, a truer reflection of the grace and glory of God in the person of Jesus Christ living His life in and through us.. Please give my warmest greetings and love to any of our mutual friends, that may visit you, and of course to Bunny, etc., etc. In the past couple of weeks I’ve written around 200 letters and cards. It’s too late but I still have almost as many still to write. And then the final preparations. I still struggle with congenital “blue genes” and so try to keep occupied in letter-writing etc., thankful that some sight remains even though the right optic nerve has been confirmed as dying. My two-cylinder heart chugs on. We are immortal un- til our work here is done. Thank you again for your letter, your le, your encour God bless you. Gratefully and looking forward to our next opportunity to communicate. John Munday Victoria, B.C.
