will Ha'ry ,.... ., Today, Oct. 1 as I write this, the weather has changed dramatically from wat it was yesterday when we, of the Rossland Retirees Curling Club made preparations to take over the collection of green fees at the upper course where the clubhouse is now officially closed down. This is a practice we have worked on in conjunction with the golf club for the past few years. Yesterday was a beautiful fall day, but this morning it was cold and raining so no one went down there to run things. There may be some hardy souls who will go out in the rain, but we didn't feel there would be many out looking to pay green fees. Last week's report on the Retirees day at the upper course did not make the paper for one reason or another, so here is a repeat performance. The Retirees got quite magnanimous as we expected to wind up our regular weekly get-together for the season. We had Tl out and we gave away nine balls instead of the usual five. The winners were: for low gross, Matt Mattson, Harb Martin and Don Krug all with 42's, the low net was won by Bart Dudley with a 31 and the most honest player was taken by Carl Osing with a 59. Was Tanner was closest to the.pin on number five, about 15 feet away and Richie Watkinson had the long putt on number six, an excellent 35 footer. The low hidden hole was number four and Chief Buna won in a draw over five others all of whom had fours, in the high hidden hole which was number eight, Ken Davies beat two others in a draw all of whom had sevens. We also gave Bob Walley a ball for his birdie three on the same hole: Now we shall wait for October 10 when the retires all combine at Birchbank for the windup. I don't know how many people know about this but we now have a taxi in Rossland again. it is something we have missed over the past few years and is really going to fill a gap in our city's transportation setup. It will be especially handy for the older folks who might have no other form of transportation for short distances. The present bus system is fine in its place and used by lots of people in the older age group but a taxi will take care of those late evening trips wae take at times. Now to hockey for a while. The Rossland Warriors, played an exhibition game in Grand Forms a little more than week ago, and since then, the team has picked up four more players and been practicing. Talking on the phone to Warrior manager Gerry Racicot this morning, about tonight's (Tuesday) game against the Bruins, he tells me that he feels that Rossland fans are in for a treat. The new faces are all from the Okanagan and Gerry says they all seem to know what the game is all about. I hope the fans will come on out and support the team this year. They give the team .quite a boost. Dan McFarland is now officially installed as assistant to Coach Bob Whitlock and I see in other reports that at least two former Warriors have now come out to play with Tom Renney's Junior Smokies. Rob Porcellato and Gary Cahoon boath figured in Smokie scoring against Castlegar Rebels. Wherever you go these days the talk turns to the coming curling season. Retirees' open house is October 10, which falls on a Thursday, one of our regular curling days during the regular season. Then we shall get the news of what to expect from the powers that be in the form of playing rules and rates. I've been told we may expect some surprises, pleasant ones, I hope. So it looks like next week we shall have more to report regarding several subjects. So, for now I'll say, Til next time, then!
