Their appropriately pale ladies observe the action languidly across the rim of a raised champagne glass. The year is 1940. The country is Kenya. And one might be tempted to assume that here is yet another movie (or posh TV mini-series) mythologizing the duty-bound, British upper-classes under a setting colonial sun. But look again. That dazed elegant woman in the pale crinoline hat (Sarah Miles) is watching the polo match with a pet python draped casually around her neck. And the apres-polo festivities incluie a witty round of wife-swapping. Stuffy gentility was not a hallmark of Nairobi's Happy Valley set — a conclave of high-society colonial hedonists who whooped it up while Britons back home were on rations. And Redford’s steamy, sin-smirched White Mischief has more in common with La Dolce Vita than with the ironed-handkerchief emotions of say, A Passage to India or Jewel in the Crown. he movie stars Greta Scacchi, Charles Dance, Joss Ackland and John Hurt as the movie's enigmatic Sir Gilbert Colville. Shown in various degrees of depravity is an exquisite supporting cast made up of Miles (as the featured art, literary efforts and musical selection played by Grades, 4-6 and grade 6 band. Musical selections by the Grades 4, 5 and 6 students opened the program. The Grade 6 band, under the direction of Greg Archibald, then performed itably. drug-dependent Alice de Janze), Geraldine Chaplin, Murray Head and the late Trevor Howard, in his last movie appearance. Based loosely on James Fox's painstakingly researched 1982 book of the same name, White Mischief takes its dramatic cue from the true story of the unsolved murder of the dashing Earl of Erroll (Dance), Happy Valley's most rakish male. Erroll, whose’ rallying cry was “To hell with husbands,” was found dead in his car with a bullet in his head. A lurid murder trial ensued. But the 42-year-old Radford (Another Time, Another Place and the remake of George Orwell's 1984) is too gifted a film-maker to let a storyline distract from cinema's ‘real challenge: the atmospheric creation of a time, a place and the emotions that inhabited it. And the emotions of the socialite settlers of Happy Valley were already running full tilt towards destruction when the pompous, aging Sir Jock Delves Broughton (Ackland) moved in, bringing his beautiful young wife Diana (Scacchi) with him. Focal point of the evening, the operetta David and Goli- ath directed by Joan Tuck, featured the students in Bib- lical dress complete with stu- dent-made shields, armour and swords. Art co-ordinator for the display was Bob Cacchioni. Student announcer for the evening was Dennis Clow. The i happens, and Radford treats the fated romance between Erroll and Diana with genuine tenderness. But it is Ackland’s complex performance as the tormented husband Broughton that gives the movie its emotional centre. On one hand, he’s smugly proud of his showpiece young wife, but he's also a deeply troubled man who knows that with Diana, he's bitten off more than he can chew. Filmed on location, much of White Mischief was shot in Kenya's notorious “mid-day sun.” FEATURE PHOTOS .. . Rick Sherstobitoft and Warren Hominiuk take in the Selkirk College photo exhibition. PHILOSOPHY CHANGING CHICAGO (AP) — The bow-tied bunny still stands for sexy female centrefolds, lively interviews and men's fashion tips, but behind the flagship magazine a pragmatic new philosophy is emerging at Playboy Enterprises Inc. Gone are the company-owned key clubs and casinos, the luxurious Chicago mansion gnd the Big Bunny jetliner — trappings that reflected founder Hugh Hefner's hedonistic image. In their place, Hefner's 35-year-old daughter Christie i iall HAZARDOUS MATERIALS At the end of October this year the Workplace Hazar dous Materials Information System will come into effect across Canada, The federally- legislated system, with com- to hazardous materials on the job. The WCB's workshop ser. ies, called What's WHMIS?, is building a leaner i that is more fi sound and decidedly more staid. In six years as company president, Christie Hefner has pared Playboy to its core of publishing, licensing and video businesses. The proof of her pruning shows up on the bottom line — profits in the past seven quarters. She took charge of a company that was reeling from the loss of lucrative casino licences in Britain, denial of permission to operate a casino in Atlantic City, N.J., declining magazine sales and a faltering cable television channel. Under her leadership, Playboy has closed the last of its company-owned key clubs and disposed of its interests in movie theatres, modelling and book and record clubs. MAKES PROFITS “The entire management team headed by Christie has repositioned the company to the point where profitability is now the norm,” said investment banker David Leibowitz of American Securities Corp. Having steadied the ship, Christie Hefner is charting a new. course for Playboy. In addition to its array of Playboy and Playmate brand videotapes, casual apparel, jewelry and accessor- ies, the company plans to become a distributor of similar products that will not carry the Playboy name or bunny emblem. These theoretically will have a broader appeal. ... ‘charting new course for Playboy’... The first move in that direction was Playboy's quiet acquisition of the Sarah Coventry jewelry line in November through its neutrally named new subsidiary, Licensing Unlimited Inc. The new strategy doesn't mean the Playboy trademark has outlived its usefulness. Playboy magazine, with an average paid circulation last year of more than 3.6 million, is still the company’s strongest suit — though circulation may never again approach the 1979 zenith of 7.2 million. ‘The magazine contributed more than $98 million US to Playboy's 1987 revenues of $162 million. TORONTO (CP) — Share prices fell on major stock markets in North America during the week as the spec- tre of higher interest rates spooked investors. HOPES HIGH Although the Playboy Channel has had trouble holding subscribers, the company has high hopes for its video unit, whic just released its first Playmate video in eight months thanks to a new distribution deal with HBO Video. Playboy's $11 million profit in 1987 and in the first nine months of the current fiscal year followed a $62 million loss in 1986. Before turning profits in 1984 and "85, the company had notched a string of losses stretching back to the first quarter of fiscal 1982, the year Christie Hefner took over. Hugh Hefner, who lives in the Los Angeles Playboy Mansion, reduced his involvement in the company after suffering a stroke about three years ago. He retains the titles of chairman and chief executive officer, still approves every Playboy magazine cover and centrefold shot, and provides “creative input” on the home-video products. In contrast, Christie Hefner is an active, thoroughly involved boss. An honors graduate of Brandeis University with a degree in English and American literature, she joined Playboy in 1975 after working for a year as a journalist for a weekly newspaper in Boston. Her parents divorced when she was three. Her mother, Mildred, remarried and Christie used her stepfather’s name, Gunn, until 1973, when she renewed her relationship with her father and took back the Hefner name. ing control of Canadian Home Shopping Network Ltd. Rogers announced that it is spending $6.6 million, or $9 a share, to buy the 25-per-cent stake that Shaw Cable Sys- tems Ltd. of Edmonton owns inthe cable TV shop-at-home service. Added to the 37 per cent Rogers already owns or con trols, the Shaw interest will give it about 62 per cent of CHSN. That’s not including the option Rogers has had since April 5 on the 11-per- cent stake that CHSN presi- dent John Goldberg owns. Despite locking up control of CHSN, the Toronto-based cable and broadcast giant said it has no plans to make a public offer for the balance of the company’s shares. Graham Savage, Rogers’ senior vice-president for ac quisitions, said the $9 a share it is paying Shaw is “frac- tionally below” the level at which Ontario securities laws would force a follow-up offer — 115 per cent of the average closing price of the shares in the 20 trading days preced- ing the transaction. 0)(0 20% FASTER WEIGHT LOSS We've not only reduced the time it takes to lose weight, we've even reduced the price!
