RICK! SANDMAN .INN Castlegar — 1944 columbia Ave. WELCOME TO CASTLEGAR, RICK IPS PHARMASAVE 365-7813 “tn the Heart of Downtown Castlegar Hansen fought self-pity By JIM TAYLOR s Columnist ports He was 15 years old, lying in a bed, knowing he'd never be able to use his legs again. Down in the dark and frightening hole into which his mind had retreated he saw a picture of himself, trapped within four walls of an institution for the rest of his life, with faceless strangers feeding him, dressing him, lifting him to and from bed. And something in him said, “No!” It would not be that way. He wouldn't let it be that way. Maybe he couldn't walk — but he could live. Maybe he'd be tied to a chair — but he could reach out and grab the best life he could. Maybe he couldn't win — but he could fight. And so Rick Hansen declared war on himself, He fought self-pity,’ he fought despair, he fought the pain and frustration as he forced his mind and heart to focus on one goal: he would rebuild his shattered body to the best it could be, and drive it as far and as high as it could go. No one will ever know how often he wanted to quit, how often he cried, how often he pounded his fists into the arms of the hated wheelchair, how often he was tempted to crawl back down into that hole forever. But he never did. Instead, he’s just kept fighting — for 13 years. And he’s won. He's won big. He won wheelchair will spill him from the chair. And for the first time since that day in the bed, Rick Hansen feels helpless. He’s winning the physical part. He can live with the pain and conquer the hills. He can't raise the money. That's up to the rest of us, and lucky ones not tied by fate to a set of wheels. All he can do now is keep rolling — and pray we understand. ‘The purpose of the Rick Hansen Man in Motion world tour is to celebrate the ability of all people to overcome the les and ks that life p While the establishment of the trust fund for spinal cord research, wheelchair sport and rehabilitation ms is an important goal for Rick, even more progra: important is the fact that the tour is generating a broad-based awareness of disabled people and their ost: ial. marathons around the world. He's played ehais basketball. He’s been named (with Wayne Gretzky) Canada’s male athlete of the year. He's earned his degree in J physical education. He's met the Pope. ‘And now he has another goal. He wants to wheel his chair 25,000 miles around the world to raise $10 million for spinal cord research, and to focus attention on the thousands in chairs and the thousands more who will be until we find an answer. He's been out there wheeling through rain and heat, inching his way up hills so steep the slightest tilt backward ‘The tour has inspired people, from all walks of life, to join forces and work together to create a better quality of life. Everyone has dreams and goals; as well as challenges to which they must respond. This very reality presents itself as the common bond between us. Rick's philosophy and message are one: “There is nothing we can't do if we set our minds to it.” WE'RE WITH YOU, RICK IB/V/E|R/S| The following corporate sponsors for the Rick Hansen Man-in-Motion World Tour say: "WElLCHE Home , Kick’.
